All---I had my VS in a show yesterday with 225 other cars--this is the largest such show in the County and really the only big one we have outside of Little Roch.

So I am anticipating "the" question and how to answer it. The only category that came close to fitting my car,was "imported cars"
as the Speedster clearly wasnt at truck, a resto rod, an original
pre-50 car or a late model, etc,etc so I listed mine as Imported.

I was between two 70's Corvettes and for every person that stopped to take a closer look at the Corvettes, 20 stopped to ogle the Speedster.(But who is surprised at that--right?)

I guess that from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm maybe 150 people stopped to look at the Speedster. maybe 10 asked "Is that a real one?" All I said was "Well they have started making them again with a lot of improvements obver the old ones in a factory in Southern California and have built over 2,500." That perfectly satisfied them all.

Show winners were to be announced right after 4:00 buy exactly at 4 the skies opened up with a massive thunderstorm including lightning and hail. Everyone bailed out of there at once---mass bedlam---one organizer came to me and shouted over the storm "You won--we'll call you" so I don't know what I won--I guess first place in imports, but I really don't know. There was a category for "crowd favorite" which would be nice to have? (I'll report back what the VS won though.)

I believe that Kirk will be getting a lot of hits on his website today and maybe we can get a few new owners in this area of the country.

Maybe this will help others answer this question if they get it.

Well I just got a call from one of the show organizers and the car got first place in the "Imported Car" category. I'll pick up my trophy when I get back from Carlisle.

There were 2 Jags, not that great, 3-4 nice old Bugs-- a like new '68 VW type 1 convert ,a MGB that looked like a new car, a real wierd Volvo with sweeping tail fins--you know the one, a Smart Car, a couple of Mercedes converts,a Range Rover that was only a year old, a Rolls,a BMW 2002 (the old boxey one) and several others. It was the smallest category, understandable here in Dogpatch where the pick up rules, but I was pretty happy.

Thanks to Jim who walked me through the framed sheet he puts in his windshield at gatherings. My windshield sheet said "Manufactured by Vintage Speedsters in Hawaiian Gardens, CA" so that's disclosure enough I guess.

I let a lot of parents sit their kids in the Speedster and take pictures which seemed to really please them.

Yes--I will send some pix to Kirk too. He really has gone above and beyond with help and pestering for two years.

I don't think of my car as any sort of show car" as it's just a pretty much average Speedster and will be put to shame by lots of other Speedsters at Carlisle, but it just goes to show that an average Speedster is more desirable than lots of restored / like new other kinds of cars! ---Jack
Well! I'm glad you got it. and I'm happy for Ya.

I felt pretty much the same way about my D when i carried it to a show at Rockingham Drag way. at the North vs. South XIV. a Hot VW event..

It got best Kitcar.Hey their were only 3 in my class..

Thatwas the same show that the so called friend kept the prize money. And he was the one that insisted I go in the first place..

Anyway I'm glad for Ya..

\___/

I got my prize ..and I enjoy it every time I drive it.

I don't intend to set myself up for an more shows ether. If you guys want to meet and shoot the breeze that's fine. I'd be glad to go when It's better for me at work.

But i can't now...
Way to go, Jack!!! Congrats on the win! Marc laughed when I told him you let kids sit in the car for pics. I guess he's had way too many sticky fingers 'visiting' him for photo ops up in the cockpit (oops, PC now: it's the flight deck!) to ever let a kid in our little Speedy!
But seriously, it's really great that so many people stopped and admired your car. And REALLY great that you won the trophy!!! Post a pic of it when you get it!

Susan-Sure--I'll post a picture when I get back from Carlisle. Believe me I checked those kids out pretty good before I put 'em in the car!

I'm supposed to go pick up the trophy on the 23rd which is right after Alice and I get back from Carlisle by way of Charlotte and NYC.

We roll out of here (Hot Springs) on Tuesday and meet up with John Hallstrand in Knoxville, on to Christiansburg Wednesday vis Bristol and lunch with Tom Raymond then on to Carlisle with 8 or so cars after C'burg. I just spent two hours loading three pages of tools, supplies and parts into the Speedster. Alice wonders where she and HER stuff goes! W'll take two soft Lands End bags for clothes and I'll put the small suitcase on the luggage rack for another 20-30 pounds of her stiching and God knows what all.

Very exciting to get ready to launch on a 2,600 mile round trip in the speedster. (Using the car's own wheels!)

Jack, There may be no greater pleasure than those kids being allowed to sit in a real "show car". My grandkids call the Hunny, "Pop's Racecar" and brag to one another each time they get a ride. They know it's important to keep feet off the seats and not hang on the door with zippers exposed. But I still remember sitting on the rear of the giant saddle of my late cousin's 1948 Indian when I was six years old. We even rode to the park and watched guys flying model airplanes in Cleveland Metro Park. (That was 1951). Nuff sed.
Jack,
Way to go on your win! This is my Spyders first show season and so far it has won Best Import almost every time out. It is a great feeling!! I always get the *is it real?* question... I have different answers for different people lol but my favorite one is *If you cant tell then neither will I* :) again, way to go with your Speedy!!!
