J. C. Whitney offers a gas tank that will hold 10 1/2 gallons.
I'd like to try one this size and am wondering if anyone else has instaled one? Can you still get a spare tire in the hood? Did you use your same sender? Any mods necessary?

This tank would add about 60 miles range to my car making it 240-250 miles plus I'd like to retain a spare.

It seems like a search yields info on an 18 gallon tank--not this smaller one.

Any advice would be appreciated!

The JC Whitney are VW replacement 10 gal. tanks and they DO work and fit correctly allowing the use of a (small) spare tire.
They don't take up any more trunk space than the aftermarket tanks of 8.5 gals. that VintageSpeedsters uses.
The same sender will work, but with still have the same problems it had in the Vintage supplied tank.

I put in a Whitney tank a couple of years ago. There were two things: 1) there was some trouble about charges for the cap or getting the cap. Whitney was good about giving me EXACTLY what was specified in the catalog at that price. b) for my CMC (1990 vintage) I had to cut a clearance hole in the hood liner. Pretty easy with a diamond/carbide hole saw.

Marty--I won't be able to get a spare into the trunk with a 16 gallon tank---I really want a spare tire.

If that J. C. Whitney is a "drop in" I will get one and install it.

I wrote Kirk and am waiting omn his response.

Sure would like to increase my range by 50-60 miles!

I wonder if anyone can say that the J. C. Whitney tank is a drop in for a VS?

Rich,

Yes, I did hear back from Kirk and you can't get a spare tire in the trunk and also put in a 10 1/2 gallon tank. If I was willing to do without a spaer, I'd go all the way up to a 16 (or whatever it is) gallon tank.

I have been getting 27-29 mpg on the highway and just plan for 25. So the 8 1/2 gallon tank gives me about 200 miles to dry so I try to do legs of 150-160 miles.

I could use more range but I want the spare tire. I plan stops of 15-20 miles for gas and a pit stop so it's not a horror story as far as lost time plus it's god to stop more frequently than less.

I hope my new Type IV engine will still give good mpg.
Jack.... forget about the spare, go 16 gallon!

If you make long trips, you need the fuel capacity AND space for your gear. Carry a cell phone, credit card and keep thick tire treads.
I always carry a can of fix-a-flat, a small 12V compressor, a tire-plug kit and my 5-lug adapter plate in case I do need a new tire.
Around town, getting less than 25MPG with my 2110, I can easily go 300 miles on a tank. On the road, 400.
BTW.... I'm yet to have a break-down (knock on wood).

I'm with Ernie. I swapped for a 16 gallon tank shortly after delivery. Jack has this crazy idea that with his extra 50 horses and twice the torque, that he is still going to be driving conservetively - I think Jack is about to become a conspicous consumer of hydorcarbon resources. Anybody wanna bet?
