Dynamat sound insulation

I know a number of member have installed this product.
What are you impressions? Is it worth the money?
I will be re-carpeting my car soon, and am considering installing Dynamat, or something similar.

I'm also curious about this product, and how resistant to water it is, or does it dry out ok after getting wet.

From what I've seen that's the stuff pros use when restoring cars (I've seen it being used a lot on Overhaulin').

go to home depot it's sold for roofing "bituimous membrabe"===very similar if not same.
the spelling is way off but thats the general idea/sound

When I was doing auto upholstery, several years back. We didn't use Dynamat because of its cost. We used Bituthene, it is a membrane roofing product used on commercial roof tops.

I swear that it is identical to Dynamat, only about 1/60th the cost. They are both rubber based, adhesive backed membranes. Bituthene is available at any roofing supply store, problem is you don't need a 100 foot roll. Perhaps by asking a roofer, you can score a few feet of it.

Bituthene is the trademark, generic name is, self-healing bituminous membrane.

If you want the thicker foam based Dynamat, go to a flooring supply store and buy the nicest laminate floor underlayment they have. It is very sound absorbant, but much cheaper than Dyanmat.

it was really no big deal. There are a lot of reeally sick people out there, I got off easy. Good luck.

you can purchase Dynamat throygh the Eastwood co, $20.00 for 5-12"x12" squares which are waterproff and self adhesive.I believe it's eastwoodco.com.

Would be interested to here from anyone who has this in their car, if the sound insulating properties are as good as advertised.
One replica maker claimed the difference was "night and day"

$20. will almost buy you 50 sq. feet of the roofing stuff.

Same= waterproof, self adhesive, longer pieces to work with, great.

If you want the "name brand" printed on the back I'll loan you a marker.

My question really, is how well does either product work in reducing road and engine noise.

I didn't use the butithene in my speedster, but have used it in other cars. It does make a significant difference when layed under the carpet. I could see it makeing a difference on the carpeted wall between the engine and passenger compartment. Whether it would be significant in a speedster, I don't know. Seems that most of the sound is coming in no matter what, on a convertible.

Have not put Dynamat in my Speedster because I don't see the need (it does not sound tinny for obvious reasons) but I did cover the ENTIRE inside of my 1970 Squareback with it when I restored it a couple of years ago. Made a huge difference. Before Dynamat, I could not hear anything on my cellphone, after Dynamat it is as quiet as a Lexus (<69 db). I bought it bulk, in rolls, on the internet, to minimize the cost. I put it on the inside of the roof before I installed a new headliner, on all the floors and kick panels, back under the rear seat, and two layers on top of the removable engine deck lid which is in the back (it's kind of like a stationwagon) to minimize the engine sound. I went with Dynamat because it has no smell...I was a little leery of other products possibly having an asphalt smell to them which I didn't want. I already have to contend with possibly smelling like "old engine grease" after I drive it but I've been told not to steam clean the engine, whatever I do!

I definitely recommend the product, but my Speedster is solid with no real offensive sounds that need dampening. Granted, I cannot hear the stereo very well even though I have a 100W power booster, but I much prefer the throaty engine sounds.

Yep, There are several different types of bituthene, (2000,3000,4000,etc.) they are different thicknesses. All of the ones I have seen are self-adhesive.
