I have never had this happen on a vw. and the Key switch is fine.. The solenoid stuck and it hept spinning but did not fire up ,,

Thank Goodness.. I pulled the emergency disconnect and stopped it. I have never had to do that before..

I want to pull the starter apart,, What should I look for. I'm going to try and figure out what happened and how to fix it at home..

If this is a issue of a aftermarket solenoid. I want the club to know what suppliers to avoid.. or how to correct and check for it.

You will probably find the contact surfaces welded together....These surfaces are usualy cadmium plated to prevent this....If the plating is burned away, welding occurs.....Once this starts, it's all down hill from there....Repairing the contacts is impossible without refacing them and then having them replated....I beleive NAPA sells the solenoid seperately, and this would probably be the quickest/easiest fix.....Hope this helps & Good luck...
I un soldered the the 2 wires on the top black cover and checked that. They were fine. It did appear to be in gauging the pinion to deep ,so I backed the solenoid rod out about 1/8 of a inch . The biggest problem and I think this was it, WAS! the Bendix spline was dusty dry and stiff, so I cleaned the parts and relubed them with a good light grease.. This was a 3ype 3 starter so I need a small magnet to remove the ball bearings under the Bendix spring fork spool. 10 little 3 mm bearings very easy to lose. best to consult your Bentley book before you take that apart..

But it's back on the shelf waiting for the next time I have trouble. and works perfect now..
