What's that opening in my dizzy?

All--today changing oil and getting ready for the Carlisle trip , for the first time I noticed that my 009 distributor has a little oval
opening at the base of the dist. Maybe 1/3 the size of a penny. With the engine running I can see the innards turning.

What's that hole for? Is there some plug that plugs it?
