bart, you nailed it: "If I had a Carrera I would drive it naked, so I could say " it is the most fun you can have...period.".
And now back to Crosby's remark about the un-roadworthiness (?) of a real Speedster, 60 hp, and all of that. I will beg to differ. Now, I never had a real Speedster, but I did have a real 1956 A coupe. A normal, 1600 w/ two small Solexes. I drove that car as a daily driver for many years. Took if across country and back for a wonderful six-week sabbatical; drove it to from DC and Pittsburgh many times, often in driving snow -- nothing could stop it. It had no trouble running for long periods and long distances. There are many VW fellows w/ similar engines/trans, and likely even less hp, that were driven for 100's of thousands of miles. So I do not think the cars are inherently troublesome of frail, even at Interstate speeds. Now, if you wan to talk about creature comforts, cabin noise and so forth, well that is another story. That speaks to the frailty of the driver, however, not the car and its mechanicals.
As to the real Speedster on the '08 TotD run, it looks pretty good to me. and the engine bay is quite authentic. Could it be gussied up, and made to look shiny and neat? Of course, but what you see here is how they came.
