12v or 6v?

I know there is no sure fire way to know if a Speedster is a 6v or a 12v without measuring it with a voltmeter, but are most of today's modern replicas 12v's?

I have a 2001 built VS which I believe is a 12v system. Can anyone comment?

I'm sure yours is 12V. 1966 was last 6V year for VW. Look at top of battery - is should say -- or you perhaps can see the 6 cells (if the caps come off - 6 holes). 6 volt makes accessories like a radio hard to come by -- plus 6 volt head lights are like a weak candle. (The silver can - VW turnsignal flasher- usually has voltage staped on it too).

To expound on the previous post, Look at the battery. A 12 volt battery has 6 water cell caps, each cell equals 2 volts. A 6 volt battery has 3 cells, each with a capacity of 2 volts

Also, If you have an alternator, you have a 12 volt system and many of the old Bosch 6 volt generators were labeled "6 volts"

In all likelyhood, you probably have a 12 volt system

Thanks for the tips. I'll start by looking at the battery to see what it says. I think its 12v too, but I wanted to be sure before I start wiring a new stereo up to it. Thanks!

so where are you located in Houston? There are 4 of us with Spyders that get together on the North side of town. One is in Katy and the rest of us North side..... we could certain help lead you astray on your Speedster. I have had 2 Speedsters also...

Sorry, it has been awhile since I've been on here. I'm in downtown Houston. Any speeders around the area? Although I've had the VS for over a year, I still know very little about it because I didn't have a garage until recently. Now it's time to take a closer look under the hood. Anyone in the downtown houston area?
