Yep...
it was one of my 2165cc TI engines.
The engine originally made 187 HP on the first series of powerpulls. after about 25 hours of being purposely oveheated (most of the time)during our cooling system testing it started losing power.
After 34 hours of testing it was down to 150 BHP at the flywheel.. Then I installed it into the beetle to get some comparative data on the various systems in the car, and off the dyno.. Thats when we took it to dyno day..
The engine had been through pure hell. One head ran over 500 degrees for 15 minutes, and the case was cracked a good 4"..
When they backed her onto the dyno people wondered how it would do.. As the crowd looked upon they asked me how high to rev it and I simply answered till it:
1) runs out of air
2) floats the valves
3) scatters parts
as many other guys cringed from the RPM, I was going nuts wantintg it to blow as it hit 7,900 RPM before the valves finally floated... and it came back to an idle... later that weekend I drove it home with no problems..
I made a pretty good statement by having an engine smaller than most, built from 90% used parts, spinning 2,000 revs more than most participants and after having been super overheated still made the highest HP from a streetcar...
I was happy!
Now that engine is apart and getting equipped with a set of LN Nickies, a set of aircooled.net squishies and running 12.3:1 on pump gas...
Should make atleast 210 at the flywheel and rev to 8,000
