Hey Alan....we call those mud flaps West Virginia air brakes !!!! Welcome to Wild and Wonderful !

Tom, are you going to make it in time for the Friday cruise? Step off time is 0900. If not, I can send you the route so you can meet up with us if you like.
I'll try but go ahead and send me the route.
Alan Merklin posted:Decided against dragging a trailer to Carlisle trailer, going to tow bar the VS wide body . Today, I made a simple - large mud flap set up for the back of the F-150 truck this is in addition to the factory flaps in the wheel wells. The RV version of these things cost in excess of $300..........I did this for a whopping $17 and three hours
The center is affixed to the receiver with a 2" square U bolt and it also has two braces centered on both flaps to the truck spring hanger housings....Everything can be removed in two minutes.
Materials: main support: 3/4 x 3/4" x 6' angle $9.00 .... 2" x 4" U bolt and misc. hardware $4.00. Braces: 1" x 4' strap steel $4.00 ...The used mud flaps I cut down and were free from a local truck dealer.
Hey Doc, I could have saved you a few bucks!
Then add a set of "truck nuts" to complete the look...

Done!
Bill Prout that is VERY funny! You must be an islander.....
We will be there Wed. night for dinner, so if anyone else is around we'll get an early start. Planning a trip to Gettysburg or a museum (or something) Thurs. AM.
Weather permitting Connie and I will also arrive Wednesday afternoon. A local casual dinner. ...IMHO the Pizza Grill has and extensive menu and great food .
I love it when a plan comes together. We've been there and it's great. We'll stay in touch.
Days Until Carlisle Clock~
I remember when Chris and I were organizing the event (2006 - 2009) and we would arrive late Wednesday afternoon, just to get there and begin to set things up before everyone else began to arrive on Thursday. Make sure Hotel folks were ready, the Carlisle folks were under control, the tent was up, the restaurants were really ready, the drive sites were ready and on and on. This was especially true in 2006, when we had to make sure everything was ready to go to build Lane's Speedster (it was) and all of the volunteer builders were lined up (they were, too).
Then, more and more people started arriving on Wednesday to be there when others started to arrive, too. In all honesty, I think there was Beer involved, but I can't prove that.
Next thing you know, everybody is starting to arrive on Wednesday to build it into a 4-day event! Nothing wrong with that, believe me - just meant more Beer!
Places I remember: Hoss' Steak House on RT 11 in Carlisle. TERRIBLE steaks. Don't go there. Hunters Lodge near Carlisle. We threw them a ringer and almost doubled the headcount 2 weeks before the event for Saturday evening dinner and they pulled it off without so much as a grumble and the food was great. Next year, they had closed and we couldn't use them. Another place, can't remember the name of it, had us in one big banquet room, and some African-American 50'th Birthday celebration in the next banquet room. Exquisite traditional African formal outfits on everyone next door (they were truly breath-taking outfits), along with REALLY LOUD African music for most of the time we were there, but they finally gave us a break so we could do our presentations. I always miss "All Star Sports Bar", too - too bad that they closed. Then there was the time we all went to a go-kart track after the dinner and Danny P was involved in a Dodge-ums hit-and-run on the track, suffering whip-lash to his neck (we have post-race photos). Or the late afternoon when Henry Reisner was tossing chicken bones around Kelly Frazer's car, trying to exorcise Hydro-lock in the hotel parking lot, all while there were all sorts of local Tornado warnings in that Carlisle area.
Stories - There are a million of them.
And Beer! Lots of people bring their favorites from home. Last year, I had a bunch of "Worm Town" Micro Brew ("Don't Worry, Be Hoppy") and tossed one to Kelly Frazer while he was trying to do an engine rebuild or something under Bill Drayer's RV awning. Danny P had some Growlers from some place near WallKill, NY or something - Righteous Beer that was, too.
..........so to continue to cherish fond memories, show up this year.
I would love to, Alan, but I signed up for a week long bicycle trip through the Colorado Rockies in June and that tapped me out for my nutso money for this year. Too many events, not enough money, for this old retired guy.
Just thought of another one, related to Hunter's Lodge - We got all done with the Saturday evening dinner and everyone bailed and headed for the hotel (for more Beer and the raffle). I was organizer, so after I settled with the Restaurant folks I'm wandering out to the parking lot and whom do I see, all alone, but Henry Reisner. Apparently, the right-seat ride he took to get out there left without him (!?!?!?!?!). So I said, "OK, Henry. Hop into Pearl and I'll give you a ride back!"
Now.......I don't know if it is true or Henry was just being polite (and a politer person than Henry I have never found), but we take off and after a couple of minutes Henry says, "Isn't this a CMC? This car is really nice and it rides and handles great!"
Personally, I think he was being polite. I've ridden in more than a few IM's including the late George Brown's (both of his IMs) and Jim Ward's IM, along with a few others, and they are all very nice vehicles and definitely a cut above a run-of-the-mill CMC, and even though I've tried my best to make my CMC as close to IM and Beck-like as I can, it still has the stigma of being a CMC. It made me feel so good to have Henry say that.
And it's too bad that this was years before I got that gas heater running. It was raining like hell as we went back and we could have used a much better defroster than my chamois de-fogger sponge.
Yeah, I don't do go-karts. Anyway, i drive one every day, right?
Beer was from The Gilded Otter one year. One year or two I brought my home-brew. One year I got it from Newburgh Brewing Co.
As far as I'm concerned, it was all good.
Do y'all remember when Carey Hines and I took my Spyder to get beer and came back with 4 cases in our laps? That was fun!
@Alan Merklin: 6a.m. is a bit early to start the, ahem, festivities, isn't it?

Al and Alan, we will be there Wednesday evening as well! :-)

Hold it- you're one of the people I was really (and I do mean really) looking forward to meeting- what do you mean you're not going to be there?!

It's never too early, Danny. Alan may decline but we can discuss it over an... um... beverage?...
I am looking forward to this...

@Gordon Nichols, it is so lovely to hear you wax poetic about Carlisle. It does my heart good!
Soooo... we can hand you back the reins on or about 5/21??? 😁😂
Nope, I'm done (Cory knows that, too).
After a while the event organizer (whomever it is) starts to run out of new, fresh ideas of things to do to keep everyone entertained, so it's time for others to get involved and continue "Speedsters Meet Spyders" as a World-Class Event. Proximity to and some knowledge of the greater Carlisle/Mechanicsburg/Harrisburg area is helpful, but not a show-stopper, as there are others on here from around that area to offer ideas.
It has evolved over the years from all of us hanging out at the show field all day Friday thru Sunday (that can get boring regardless of the weather) to progressively more driving events which everyone seems to like. There are a surprising number of museums and such in the area, and that riverboat ride on the Susquehanna last year was really neat. The country roads throughout the area are delightful for cars like ours so driving an hour plus to get somewhere is very pleasant - that drive that Jeni/Cory have set up looks like a LOT of fun, for sure. Those are the kinds of things that new people organizing the event might come up with, so it is time for someone ("Beuller?") to step up for next year. Don't be afraid, there is a bunch of people ready to help you out!
I had a lot of fun doing it for four years and we all had some really good times but I'm looking forward to what people come up with in the future, too.
So who wants to head up "Speedsters Meet Spyders at Carlisle - 2019"?

Oh, and Sorry, Al. I'm flattered, for sure, but I am far less impressive (and shorter, too) in the flesh. Just a Grampa who looks like his Avatar.........Maybe without the cane, though.

Don't worry, Gordon, I'm not very tall either, and Bob says I look more like my avatar than I realize (this is a really scary thought!), so I know the feeling. Another time, my friend!
Ummmm........Ahem....(thump, thump, thump). I have an announcement.
It seems as though the "Water Cooled" side of Five Cent Racing has decided to join the festivities at Carlisle for the first time in 5 or 6 years and has invited me to go along for the ride in his 996.
I seriously think we may be way behind the curve on this, especially for the Saturday dinner (The Caddy Shack always has room for two more but don't want to stiff the banquet facility), but if we can be squeezed in for the banquet we sure would both appreciate it. If not, we understand and will probably just crash it anyway.
Don't know where we'll be staying, but we'll find some place close to the Mother Ship Hotel in Mechanicsburg that'll accept a water-cooled Porsche and questionable credit cards (mine has Mickey Mouse on it.....Really!)
Somehow, I just couldn't disappoint Al Blanchette (or some of you other knuckleheads). We'll probably head down really late Thursday (don't wait up for us) or first thing Friday.....Don't know for sure when yet, as "Five Cent Chris" is just starting a new job next week and I don't know his schedule.
Outstaing news @Gordon Nichols.
Gordon .. Call the Courtyard Hotel in the AM and ask for Corrine ... ask her if she would honor the SOC rate ( for what it's worth, tell her I said ok.......Call Cory & Jeni to hook you and Chris up for Saturday night dinner ASAP ....but PLEASE leave those spandex bike shorts home :~) Glad you are making an appearance !
Will do, Alan, and thanks.
Wow, the winds of change are a-blowing!
Well, good on you and extra cool that Chris is coming too.
Cheers.
Great news, Gordon!
Out STANDING!!! It'll be great to see Chris again for the first time in years.
Oh, and Gordon, when Alan says leave the spandex bike shorts at home, you WILL have to replace them with something, ok? Please!
You guys should see me in Spandex - I have AWESOME legs!

So Chris is driving 996 these days?
Yeah, Bruce, he purchased it over the winter.
And just picked it up yesterday after having the IMS upgrade and a new clutch done (They used the LN Engineering upgrade kit).
I swear that doing the IMS upgrade alone adds $10K to the value of the car. That model of Porsche was awesome except for that fatal flaw. Fix that and they're awesome forever!
Here you go, ECB!

For those that have not been to Carlisle ~
I see our Tent!
Way up in the northwest corner, distorted by the Earth's curvature!
So we get that much field all to ourselves?
We are on the left next to the stage
