I'm in the export vehicle transport business so let me s'plain ......

A majority of US owned antiques, classics and street rods are being sold off to Europe and Middle East buyers for ridiculously silly money. There are over 50 warehouses in the Port Newark New Jersey area that are chock full of these cars waiting to be shipped across the pond.

A year or so ago there was a '56 Porsche Continental near me that was a POS it sold on "eBeg" for a whopping 27k..a car that twenty years ago would have commanded a mere $75 as junk yard scrap .

eWhy high costs of "unobtainium" old cars?  Because there is no place to safely invest your dollars now.  Buy real estate?  Might have just missed the all time low or at least buy fast. Put it in bank and get .7% interest which is taxed as normal income?  Buy stocks which or either overinflated in price or company is on verge of bankruptcy -- and then when capital gains 15% tax goes away pay high income tax rate.  Look at price of silver and gold - which was a possible choice few years back. At least owning old car and looking at it brings back a nostalgic vision of the good old days when gas was 19.6 cents per gallon and you could buy Sunoco 260 grade!

Alan:

Thanks for the reply.  I was being a little sarcastic with my comments on this, in relation to another thread that was commenting on the cost of an IM on Ebay.

I quote:

"I love these cars but for 45k you could buy a classic 1970 SS Chevelle or amazing Lincoln Continental convertible (amongst many real classics)."

That comment got the old 'IM vs the rest' debate going, with the usual suspects chiming in.

Just trying to add a little humor to the day.

Bob (AKA, I don't own a replica)

What is it with people who swoon after these old pieces of crap?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you are not an American.

And if you are indeed "trying" to be sarcastic by mocking a post made by me previously, you are quoting me incorrectly.

My exact words below

quote:

I love these cars but for 45k you could buy a classic 1970 SS Chevelle or amazing Lincoln Continental convertible (amongst many real classics).

I'm I a terrible person for not understanding paying more than 20k for a replica car?  I almost feel guilty paying what I did for my used tub.

I see a pretty big difference between your attempt at sarcasm and what I actually said. You used my words completely out of context.

I never called anything an old piece of crap or mentioned spending that kinda money on anything that old.

And if this is you opinion, let me ask you...

What makes your car superior to an old American piece of crap?

Tell me where your original Porsche trumps an old American classic...

Old 57 1600 Porsche:

-Leaks

-Carbureted

-Underpowered

-Dangerous

Classic American (lets use a 57 Vette)

-leaks

-Fuel Injected

-TONS of power

-Dangerous (yes, a 57 Vette is about as bad as a Tub)

But, pick any other American piece of junk and put the two in a head-on collision. The American car would drive right through a Porsche (any of them).

So pray tell where a classic Porsche trumps a classic American car?  I see no marvelous feat of engineering with a Porsche that warrants calling a classic American car a piece of junk.

You know how I know you own an original Porsche?

You know how I knew you weren't an American?

I don't even need to answer these questions...

But I will say this... I love and respect all cars classic, American, German (whatever)

If I had the coin to buy a real one, I would.  But I don't... so here I am.

Gee, I wish I did own an original Porsche, now that it's put that way.  I could duplicate James Dean's accident.

Anyway, it was all meant to be in fun, and my apologies if it was not expressed that way sufficiently.  I didn't mean to get anyone riled up.

Let's all and make up.

And Gerd, Intermeccanicas are so expensive because idiots like me are willing to pay the price (although I did buy a used one).  It's also because of the Corinthian leather.

So there...

My balls have been busted...

Guess I gotta learn the personalities of this forum a bit better before I throw down the gauntlet.

Shawshank Redemption... one of my top 3 movies of all time.

Random* My 25 year old GF asked what my fav. movie was.  I told her The Shaw Shank Redemption.  She had never seen it...

That night we watched it (about a month ago) and she cried and said it might be her fav. movie of all time now as well.

Also.. at the end they meet up in Zihuatanejo (San Juan Taneo) which is actually Ixtapa Zihuatanejo.   I'm heading there for a 10 day surf trip in a couple months.  Place is real as is the AMAZING surf.

Christian:  You have to report back if the pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams, and whether or not it really does have no memory.

Love that movie.
