^ That. X10 on that.
I've been as guilty as the next guy of joining in a hijacking of some poor guy's "for sale" thread (I'm doing it right now, but this one has been completely wrecked as as sales tool already), and I'm going to resolve to never do it again.
However, I'm also pretty sure that unless every single person in the web-o-sphere resolves to do the same thing, we're going to end up in the same spot where nobody actually sells a car on the SOC. I'm a member of a fair amount of these kinds of car websites-- none of them allow people besides the original poster to comment on a "for sale" thread, and then it's usually to lower the price or say the car is no longer available.
As far as I can tell, nobody is selling cars here. After trying to 10 years ago, I noted at the time that guys that want to have their car picked at post them for sale here. Guys that want to sell their cars go to ebay. The trouble is, the fees to sell a car on ebay have become almost confiscatory, and it's a sad comment that a guy can't be left alone to sell a speedster on the speedsterowners website.
Let's change this. I've got two suggestions for Theron, if he's listening:
- Don't allow anybody but the original poster to comment on any "for sale" thread.
- Institute a fee to do so. Charge us 5 bucks to put up a parts offering, and 50 to put up a car. It seems like a much more straightforward approach to funding the site than charging people who voluntarily participate.
I'm sure these suggestions won't sit well with some folks. I'm equally sure somebody will comment that I'm not paying my fair share by not being a "contributing member", but I gave to this site for years and stopped when the hooligans almost took it over. Since then, I've come to think there's a better way to fund it.
An appropriate funding level for "specialness" in membership is a subject for another thread. Let's whack this mole down and then worry about the next.
