I have a set of 1956 black on yellow plates that was last registered in 1962 (still has the sticker on it), but what I have is a Vintage Speedster with a 1961 VW pan/vin #, So DMV will not allow me to use them. One of them is in near perfect condition requiring no work.. Ideally what I would like to find is the same 1956 plates that were last registered in 1961, and sell or trade the ones I have. My replica has beehives so 1956 black on Yellow is prefered

Go to ebay "all catagories" and type in "1956 california license plates". They usually have over a hundred listed at a time. Do that everyday until one with a 1961 sticker shows up. Will DMV know if you just buy a real 1961 issue sticker and put it over the 1962 sticker? If that works, that is a much more economical route. Good luck.
