I bumped into an elderly (more elderly than I) at a car show on Saturday who told me he had a '56 Porsche engine, probably of dubious condition. Claimed he had it running at one time or another in a Ghia back in the day. He lives not to far from me. I'm tempted to give him a call and take a look at it. Any of you guys venture to offer an opinion on what it MIGHT be worth depending on condition? Knowing parts for it would probably be pretty steep, do you think it would be worthwhile?

I'm pretty certain it's not a Carrera, but gosh, wouldn't that be a surprise...since he did mention something about dual Solex carbs, the holy grail is probably a long shot.
If it is a carrera engine and complete it would be worth a small fortune. If running and documented a large fortune. But I would agree it probably is not. If not but complete and not in need of major repairs I would venture a value at about 2.5k - 6k.
There's no harm in going to see what he's got, and what he wants for it.
True...he did throw a 1500 number at me but I got the distinct impression it needed some work...since he lives near by, I should go check it out for the fun of it and get some photos.
GO! Go now!
Bob, you seem to know something I don't...should I put it on the back of the Speedster on Saturday and "door prize" it?
Rich- While I don't think an original 356 pushrod motor is necessarily a great choice in one of our plastic cars (better power to $$$ spent ratio with VW power and easier to find parts), I'm sure an ad in the Samba would find that thing a home in a period correct car.
Correcto, Al...I'm more curious to it's value to the discerning aficionado snob. As Vinny noted last week, I'm always trying to make a buck off of my friends

Oh yeah; I forgot about that! You're a funny guy, Rich!
PS- I don't have a clue what a 356 motor that may "need some work" is worth; when you figure out the market value, let me know...
I do know that my kid brought home a boat anchor Type 3 engine a couple of months back that I would gladly give away to a needy soul just to get it out of my garage.
I'll take a Type 3 engine!
Jeff
Im very interested in the Porsche engine, should it be for sale
Autobahn, Here is the motor of your dreams. What a deal!!

I guess I could get it and put it in my beater Gmund. I could always use a third spare...
Jeff
I'd look to see if all the 356 engine is there and that it turns over still. Cleaned up with air cleaners removed and a piece of tempered glass for the top and it would be a great coffee table for the man-cave! Also check the engine serial number to aid in id-ing the year and hp. I'm guess int S version would be more valuable. Heck, just the oil filter assemblies fetch $200+ on ebay.

Thanks for all the info men.
I just called the guy...too bad he's going in for an operation today..."call back next week"...now the anxiety builds. I dug this up.

Jeff, see your dialogue message.
Go buy it or tell the owner to put it on 356 registry.
If he had it in a Gia, he probably doesn't care a whole lot about it.
Go take a look and offer up $200 ?
Do like Gas Monkey garage and START LOW
Yes, Christian, the point about it being in a Ghia has me wondering of its condition as well. I don't have high hopes for this thing. I thought Gas Monkey bought high and sold low?
