Bought a 1984 Carrera 911 Targa with 19,700 miles a couple months ago. The car is like new and runs perfect.

My question is about how and where the clutch pedal engages. It grabs near the top of the pedal travel like a surprise package. Neither of our other two stick shift cars (T/R Speedster and 997 Carrera S) grab so quickly.

Does anyone know if this is normal for a 1984 era Porsche?

Brian,

Your clutch is NOT adjusted correctly. Those folks that adjust the clutch near the top and only have a very short push of the pedal to disengage the clutch are riding the throwout bearing and the clutch may NOT be fully engaged. OK for racing applications but not OK for the street.

I have a Bently book for your car and if you like I can scan the adjustment procedures for you.
That's a bit high. They're super easy to adjust. If you are fairly small, you don't even need to jack it up. Yours is a 915 transaxle with cable linkage. The cable eventually stretches a little which is what happens (usually) when it's too low, or a little bit of normal wear and it gets too high.

One of my favorite years by the way. We put an 85 (basically same as an 84) drivetrain into my husband's 80 cabby. Absolutely love the 3.2 and the 915.

Course everyone tells me I'll love a G50 better - LOL!
