1985 Intermeccanica Roadster for Sale.  I bought this car 22 years ago at the Knoxville Porsche dealer, sold it to a neighbor and bought it back a few years ago. The black interior is very good but shows some wear around the edge of the drivers seat. The black top has a tear on the right side behind the window but I have a new tan top you can install.  The white paint was professionally redone around 8 years ago and is in truly excellent condition as are the wheels and new tires.  Always kept in my airplane hanger or garage.  Runs great and serviced last fall.  I take care of things and it shows, we live near Gatlinburg, TN.  Victor Weals. Price is $14,500 firm and worth it. vic.weals@gmail.com

I've met Mr. Reisner a few times at Carlisle.  He told me this car is built on the VW platform. The speedo quit around 20k miles, so I would think it has less than 25k now.  I'm not sure which engine they offered that year and my mechanic says there is no rust underneath, this car has always been in the south in dry weather.  I don't know answers to many of the details posters ask, however I owned a 2004 IM Speedster I sold for $37,500 and this car is just as much fun.  Do a search here for my last name Weals and you will see the history of my activity on this forum the past few years. This a nice car and worth the money, I apologize for not responding to every question with details and don't plan to do that. Thank you.

Sure wish the owner could provide more info on the engine/tranny , running gear  combo but given the history of ownership, the lack of info is typical methinks. Title info would be nice too. Likely still a good deal on a base Roadster. Driveway avec stamped concrete is a positive clue to care of the car. Damaged black roof matches black interior which IMHO is not a good combo with off white / cream car exterior. Spare tan roof will not match interior. That said, probably a good base for a very nice car. Did I mention the nice driveway....stamped is nice and doesn't tolerate oil leaks well. Almost any engine could have been fitted in the car. A new Soob and a few cosmetics would make this a damn nice cruiser for well under $20K

Thank you for your interest everyone.  I've been a bit overwhelmed with emails and unable to reply.  The car sold yesterday.  It is in top condition with an $8,000 paint job 6 years ago and perfect mechanicals. Apparently I priced it too low.

And, thus the top doesn't fold down below the back ridge line.  In my opinion, a proper fitting speedster top, up, looks nicer than a roadster.  The roadster, top looks more dome shaped, than the speedsters elongated shape.

But, man you can't beat roll-up windows!!!  Heaters, defrosters all work better and you are dry upon arrival.  (So that must also extend driving season.)

Cole, I also think roadsters were later than the speedster production timeline, thus some production improvements, I think, there was some timeline overlap.  For definitive answer go to the 356 Registry website,

No need to go to the Registry...no one there is old enough to remember!

The speedster was created for the American market at the urging of Hans Hoffman (Porsche Importer) Low price...Sold like hotcakes...but after four years people were getting wet, cold and disgruntled and sales were dropping off...so Hoffman convinced Stuttgart to fit it with roll-up windows but keep the price way below the luxurious Cabriolet.

Walla!...the 1959 convertible D (D for Drauz the sole body supplier) In essence a still inexpensive 356A speedster but with roll-up windows, and Hoffman couldn't get his hands on enough of them.

Stuttgart's plans were to raise the headlight position and bumpers beginning in 1960 calling them 356B's, and add a Super 90 engine option. They decided to continue the less expensive "D" version...but couldn't call it a D for Drauz because Drauz couldn't supply enough bodies to meet demand. So Stuttgart called it a "Roadster" instead, and used several coach builders to supply the bodies. The Roadster was dropped from the lineup when Porsche finalized the venerable 356 with the "C" model...Improved mechanics, wider rear window and engine lid... fitted now with twin engine grills.

There are only a few of us left that have a first hand memory of all that.

Thanks Carl. I'm old enough, but spent several decades with sailboats.  And what a funny dichotomy.... wooden boats  vs. fiberglas boats,  Eh?

My lovely bride and I lived on a sailboat in the Central Valley Delta, for 2 years.  She declared one day....I want a laundry room...washer/dryer.....

So now 20 years later, I'm again/still a landlubber!

Cheers,  Art

All 1331 Convertible Ds were 1959 models built between August 1958 and September 1959. Some may have been sold in 1958 but were manufactured for the 1959 model year. They just got to a dealer early and were sold and titled in the 1958 calendar year and any "1960" Convertible Ds were still at the dealer in 1960 and thus were sold and titled as 1960 Porsches.

Hans definitely more fitting for a Austrian born boy! Always wondered what the middle name E was for? Edsel?  Nope Edwin.  He's probably most hated man in Detroit since he "is credited with almost single-handedly establishing the import vehicle business in the United States"  As Carl well knows, "Hoffman is even credited with designing the famous Porsche crest logo in the early 1960’s"
