1989 IM conv D what is this any idea?? | 356 Speedster, 550 Spyder, Replica, Automotive Community

Was taking a closer look at the IM last night and couldn't figure out what this was. Any body have any ideas. It's in front of the passenger tire. It's round, about 6" in diameter. Disregard the wires in front of the pics.

A big Horn grill or maybe mounting for a Ebersparcher BN4 gas heater? Were wires to it? It looks to have an opening grate - so could be air intake (missing hose) to interior?

Its heavy material maybe 1/4" and the strips are weatehr stripping i think. I'll try to get better picutres of it IF i can get my girlfriend to stop driving it long enough

Looks like a mount for a flux capacitor.
