Well, first I would like to say thanks for all of the responses. One of the reasons I posted this on here was because all of you are so well informed. So, now instead of continuing to berate me because you think the price is too high, how about some advice?

It is a beautiful car, and I am selling it. Any ideas on what price would be proper? Any ideas on how to go about it?

Thanks in advance.
Kevin, look for a recent back issue of "Excellence". They do a value article each month and I recall seeing the 911 Speedster valued in the last 6 months or so. There is a listing, usually in the back of the magazine, that lists and describes the back issues. You could list in the Panorama or find a 911 bulletin board and post there. Good Luck
That's good advice from Dale. You can check with Edmunds.com (Kelly Blue Book doesn't evaluate cars before 1990). Edmunds values your Speedster at $25k, but I think it should go for more than that...after all, it's a rare item.
I'd say if you could get north of $30k for it, you'd be doing well.
Good places to list it for sale: AutoTrader.com, CarsDirect.com, CollectorCarTrader.com, Porsche Market Letter, and (believe it or not) Ebay is still a great way to sell a classic Porsche.
'North of $30K?' I hope to shout!

Having recently done the sales exercise with my 911 and checking into Panorama and Excellence, etc...The '89 Speedster, while a more subjective Porsche choice than say an 89 cabriolet, is easily a $45-55K vehicle, as always, based on condition and mileage.

The intrinsic dollar value, based on a car's or manufacturerer's myth or production number count, color uniqueness are big factors in some folks mind, not so to others.

The '94 speedster, even with its larger engine pales by comparisonn to the '89 models and therefore draws a lesser dollar in today's market...it is probably a $35K car.

You're just in the wrong venue my man...everyone here is driving a car that looks like a $50K car (except GB who will have exceeded that figure in his quest for fame and ego-gratification) but are, for the most part, VWs inside.

The bidders on eBay are looking for blood in the water. Auto Trader, yahoo, wheels & deals and some other broader-based sports/luxury sites is where you need to be...Print mags are pricey; Wall St. Journal is what I used when I sold my Turbo Carrera.

A nice printed flyer with pictures (well within most everyone's computer skills) sent to all the Porsche mechanic's shops, body shops, etc etc shouldn't be overlooked...

You have a special car that needs a special buyer.

Best of luck,

Paul Harford
Pauls, right. All the 89 speedsters I have seen are in that price range. All other 911s from that year are much less. I have only seen 1 89 speedster on the road, and it was very well taken care of. You never know, there may be a lurker here who is looking for one to match his replica speedster. You just have to really want a 911 speedster. It seems to me that if you wanted the look of a 911 speedster a cabrio could be made to look like it, but then again it's not going to maintain its value like the speedsters have.

Conversions from Cabriolet to Speedster entail way too much retro-fitting, ($$$)even for me! I've looked into it and starting with the windscreen and then adapting new side windows, hardware and apparatus, new top and tonneau... then about another $8-10K for widebody flaring, Seriously, if you want the newer Porsche speedster look, you are better off buying it as the real deal!

As for our Southern CA friends, maybe I'll come shopping down there!
There has been a blue over camel America Roadster on eBay trying to garner near $50K no sale repeatedly... In talking with dealers who list exotic and specialty cars pretty regularly on eBay, I'd guesstimate that 50-60% of their offerings don't make reserve!

The other thing I've noticed an abundance of out of SoCal are the chop jobs... Porsches that were originally 1977 and then gussied up with flares and tails and Gemballinni gunk and listed at around $30-35K. Some 1980-83 911s get the turbo-look updates and masquerade as 993 turbos and such, again in that $30K range... but a good deal of the open-air cars were targas as there were no convertibles (?) from '65-83.

When you have a car that is a bubble out of normal motoring plumb, you need to have the where-with-all to suck it up and be patient, looking for the just right buyer.

I've got most of $35K sitting in a drawer for a 1989 silver or black speedster with a black interior..I don't think they are out there at that price! I'm having a tough time selling my widebodied 911Targa to move up to even a decent '89 cabriolet...

Not looking to be right, just hoping to find the right car myself sometime.
Paul
