So I had to have my car valet parked today and when I got it back the shifting was completely out of whack. I can get from first to second but after second it won't go into any gear and I have to stop and put it back in first which is where 3rd gear was an hour earlier.

I ended up getting home by finding a slow rolling hill and putting the car in third gear and building a little speed before disengaging the clutch. From third gear the car shifted into 4th but once stopped again the problem repeats. I did a search on "shift linkage" and the info I found recommends checking under the tunnel and tightening bolts at the shifter itself but obviously this hasn't happened to anyone else. The car was running excellent before and shifting tightly like it has since I purchased. It is a swingaxle car.

I did file a complaint with the valet service but I assume that will get me nowhere but frustrated and I just want my car fixed.

Any opinions much appreciated. Thanks.

Betcha that the plate under the shifter boot has . . . shifted. Back the bolts out a bit and adjust the plate so that it goes into all the gears.

The valet probably didn't know that reverse was DOWN left and back, tried forcing things a bit and moved the plate in the process.

Betcha . . .
so i was able to get the trans shifting again. It was the shift rod coupling under the access panel. Problem now is that my reverse is no longer locked out. I can reach it from nuetral almost like it is 2nd. I believe that problem will be under the shift lever but aren't sure the proper way to adjsut. My muir book doesn't really touch this and I haven't received Bentley yet. Thanks for the help earlier guys. I at least have some function again.
Thats the plate under the shifter They must have moved it also. Just losen the 2 bolts and slide it back to the origial bolt marks on the plate.

Who parked it King Kong .

It takes alot of abuse to mess that much up.

My guess is they didn't know how to find reverse. If it starts popping ot of gears when you drive it someone owes you a tranny.
Chad...

You may still have a coupling issue.

The quick, down, and dirty adjustment is as follows....

1--Select first gear.

2--Loosen the coupling.

3--Place the shift to the extreme left, and as far forward as it was prior to the parking lot incident.

4--Tighten the coupling.

You may have to try this a couple of times to dial it in....

Hope this helps...

There are a whole lot of reasons to avoid vallet parking...if I can't park the car myself I just move on down the road to someplace that allows it.....there are a lot more beaneries than there are SPyders and Speedsters around here....and I have never broken the car parking it at a local dining spot...which is more than I can say for local vallet parking......the last time someone vallet parked one of my cars it cost me $500 to get the crease removed from the fender. Of course that was more than 20 years ago, so today that crease would be $2500 or so. Of course the vallet parking folks had no knowledge and they swore it was there when I pulled in....NOT!
Yeah.....I've got a Berg shifter, where you push in a button on the left end of the "T" handle and then push the lever left and then pull back. God help the Valet guy who would ever figure that out, although the daughter of a friend in South Carolina figured it out in less than ten seconds.....

I'm with Allen - Hell will freeze over before I ever let a Valet guy park my car!
One of my classic Minis had the shift linkage broken because the valet didn't know that you had to pull up to move into reverse. It must have taken 200 pounds to push the linkage brace through the floor.

If I valet, I now check to make sure the car will be left in front of the valet stand. 90% of the time they say yes and I give them a fake key which will not start the car anyway. 10% of the time I end up finding parking myself.
