Someone just pointed me to this. Near enough to me in MD but nothing I can get excited about now, given the state of my project.

Real nice base for someone doing a Spyder build or having the skill and ambition to try to make their own SAS style Speedster. Those ej22T blocks are rare and special, it is said.

$500!!!! for a complete Turbo engine and 5-speed?!?

Five. Hundred. Dollars.

... and here I am shoveling money into the ACVW boiler as fast as I can earn it. $500 buys me a pile of badly made Type 1 parts from the far east, as long as I don't expect them to be shipped to me (that would be an additional $100). $500 would buy an nice shifter for Berg 5-speed (the ridiculously fragile one... that costs about $5K).

$500.

Half a set of Dellortos. An A1 Sidewinder (as long as I don't get a muffler). A Raby DTM. A single LN Engineering "Nickie" (one cylinder). An ignition system (if I don't get carried away).

Five hundred freakin' dollars. For a turbo. And a 5-speed.

Sometimes, it hurts to be the retro-grouch.

Feeling like I should've gone and grabbed this already to flip to one of you moneybags. It's a screaming deal if the motor is good. Big IF though.

If the motor needs going through you could spend $2k right quick, I'd guess, and still be only half through it. Timing belt kit set me back $350 or something just now. The head gasket kit was something like that too, if I remember right. That's before you get into hard parts and machine work. So. IF.

The harness is a be-otch to make even if you have a donor car (as I do). But there is a guy in CO or Canada (I forget which) who will sell you one for like $600, give or take $100. I'm probably going to end up paying him to do mine.

The computer is a boneyard item. Hard to get to but not too expensive, I hear, and they don't tend to go bad. The ECU from any older Sooby will work fine with a turbo setup, according to the boy racers on every Sube-centric board. For what that's worth.

Or you buy the megasquirt and study-up.

"Yeah", to all of that Ed.

I know nuthin's free. I also know that horsepower after 150 or so is pretty dear in the Type 1 world. I can pay $15K for something that runs about like a 350 SBC with a mild cam and some cheap headers.

The crazy part is that I don't care how cheap Subis or small-blocks are-- I'm committed (or will be soon, once the guys with the straight-jackets find me)

Ed...that lad that does the harness is Tom Sheils. Google him and check out the website. He has some cooling ideas too and an adapter / spacer for the thermostat housing which will prevent the very effective heater / rad placement combo from outsmarting the stock stat. To get around this, I'm installing a BWM inline stat on the hot side of the upper coolant manifold. We'll see.

And please...where again can I find access to " my previous posts "  ? Can't see it anywhere. Thanks.

Yeah, Shiels. I been in email with him already. Thanks, David.

And Stan: Big respect. In my fantasy life I build these P-cars all the time, and always, always air cooled. It just seems right, even though it's getting harder and harder.

The Chinese-crap-everywhere problem is no longer VW-unique (if it ever was). I sent one water pump back for the Soob cause the impeller was stamped steel instead of a cast. And the old idler pulleys on the front of the engine were Made in Japan. The new ones=Korean. The replacement timing belt itself was made in Italy. And so on. And the timing kit I bought was the spendy one.

Ted

Not always critical in all sorts of speedster applications, Ted. You can always kiss FI goodbye and install a carb and make things work if you don't want to mess with the electronics. Can't seem to upload pics again but a Weber 32/36 works pretty well.
