I've done it twice and it wasn't that bad the second time. Just need to have receipts for the major parts of the car (body, frame, engine, trans), Certificate of Manufacture, fill out the correct DMV paperwork and have a little patience and be overly polite.

The problems occur when the DMV person hasn't done the work before and doesn't ask for help or look in the DMV SOP manual. Ask a local member of this site THAT HAS DONE THE PROCESS, preferably locally, and don't let the process get you down.

You might want to check with other "kit" car forums and read what their members have done.

Yes....I had the exact same problem in Tucson, AZ. Everyone else has their AZ Speedsters registered as a VW. The DMV man insisted it be changed from a New York 72 VW to an Arizona s1973 SPC (Special Construction). Go figure? I don't have the time or energy to go back and argue with them. I was told, true or not, that Beck is next to impossible to register in many states.

"that Beck is next to impossible to register in many states"

Just FYI, tube chassis replicas (Beck included) are difficult in a few states, but very easy in the majority. That said, we have cars legally registered in all 50 states and overseas. Sometimes it takes a bit more leg work and research than swapping over a VW title. The biggest issue is the differences from state to state, some call it a Porsche, some a Beck, some register as the chassis manufacture year and others as the year it replicates, and all of those can make it tricky to transfer into a state with different laws.
I just registered my new Beck Speedster with the Texas DMV. They have titled my car as a "2011 Beck 1957 Speedster". The process was relatively painless, and the key is doing your homework up front, have all your documents in order, and be very polite and respectful to the personnel. I had a specific goal to do and walked out of the office in 30 minutes completely official and registered.
