Drum Roll please:

The 2007 version of the annual Southern Oregon Tour has been set up. It will be on October 5-7 at the Red Lion Inn in Medford, Oregon. I was able to get about $15 off the $99 rate so our rate will be $85 plus tax. The Red Lion is in downtown Medford, has a couple of swimming pools, resturant and Lounge. There are several nice eating places within walking distance so no driving to them will be needed.

Angela Lane and myself are running this again this year and Angela will be the tour master. She did a great job last year and promises to show us some great back roads in Southern Oregon. Up and down and around is to be expected.

Last year we had a swimming pool to ourselves and lots of refreshments, liquid and solid to enjoy. This year we will plan on doing the same so bring your swimming suits. Weather is still great here at that time of the year.

Friday we will gather by the pool in the afternoon, earlier for the impatient ones, and imbide in Southern Oregon snacks and golden goodness with Oregon vino for those that don't drink beer. We plan on going up to Porters for Dinner on Friday night, a 2 block walk. The Red Lion has entertainment in their lounge in the evening so those that want, can stop there before hitting the sheets. Saturday morning after Breakfast we will gather our trusty steeds and follow Angela and the Spyder into the hills. That should take up most of the day, probably stop at some cool spot for lunch and streching. Back to the Red Lion for more pool activities or whatever,(shopping)?

We'll poll everyone on Saturday and see if anyone wants to do another tour, Crater Lake, the Applegate, or whatever on Sunday.

For Hotel Reservations:

Red Lion 1-541-779-5811 or 1-800 RedLion, (indicate the Medford Oregon hotel)

Mention you are with the Speedsters Owners Club and mention the $85 rate.

This should be fun once again and the Southern Oregon Injun summer weather is almost guaranteed to be perfect.

Let me know who all is coming and how many so we can do some planning for the food and drink plus dinner arrangements.

Michele and I are at a 95% chance of driving up. She has that weekend off and enjoyed the IM BBQ so much that she wants to meet more of you/us.

Heck, after the 950 mile drive to Vancouver, the drive to Medford will be like driving to the mall, without so many soccer moms.
For those planning on coming to our SOT and want to make reservations at the Red Lion, it is best to wait for a couple of days so they can get the paper work totally entered. The group rates are showing up for our group but evidently they need to process some more paper work. I'll try it again in a couple of days and give everyone the high sign when things are clear.

Last year, we arranged a tour on Friday afternoon at Brammo Motorsports (Ariel Atom). They gave us a tour of the manufacturing facility - very very cool.

I'm going to arrange something this year as well, but not sure what. I have a few ideas, you guys and gals let me know what flips your switch. I'll arrange it - and the 2nd choice will be my fallback plan.

1. Ariel Atom tour (they are also making electric cars and electric motorcycles)

2. Visit to a local restoration shop. This fellow is not well known, but his workmanship and documentation are extraordinary. He usually has about 6-8 cars in, usually european, most between WWI and WWII vintage. Not unusual to see a 60 year old car there that is one of maybe 20 ever built. Combine that with a nearby vineyard stop and sip...

3. Visit a company that rebuilds Sikorsky heavy lift helicopters for logging and fire-fighting. Ever see the movie Swordfish? The scene where they used a copter to carry the bus in the air in downtown LA? That was THIS company and one of THEIR pilots. Nearby vineyard and or chocolate factory.

4. Gather a bunch of local wines, cheeses and foods and we can all hang around the pool at the hotel. Kick back, listen to some music and unwind.

Let us know what all-ya-all think. Though I know its early, we would really like an accurate count of the number of cars visible. Bruce and I have a surprise gift idea.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Rogue Brewery lost their Ashland, OR brewery in the 97/98 New Years flood (forget which year it was). Their only brewery is now up in Newport, OR - on the coast.

There are other breweries though... Let me know what you guys want to do.

Hey, how about going out to the indoor slick-kart track? We can block out an our or so for a "private party". Buncha SOCers zipping around on smooth concrete in little karts...

The Red Lion reservations people have entered our block of rooms at $85 a night ao anytime you're ready, let it rip. Figure on Oct 5-6 and leaving on the 7th, Sunday. Angela is setting up a tour close in for Friday afternoon so probably plan on getting to the hotel by 1-1:30 or so. I am pretty sure the tour she has set up is only a few miles away. More on this later.

Some of the previous tour attendees have already commited so you newbies, "Come on Down," for a guaranteed good time. More the merrier!

More info as we get the final pieces set. Figure on a neat factory tour on Friday afternoon, snaks and refreshments around the pool until dinner at Porters in the evening. Saturday after breakfast we'll follow Angela and her Spyder into the hills and valleys of Southern Oregon, stop for a lunch break and then return to the hotel. Sunday will be open if some want to take another drive before heading home.

Red Lion Hotel number is 1-800- Redlion and indicate the Medford, Oregon hotel. Make sure you tell them that we have special rates as "Speedster Owners Club." $85 a room. I just made mine and it works fine!

Thanks, Bruce Williams
The calendar is moving right along so continue thinking about the SOT, Southern Oregon Tour on Oct 5-7. Will be a nice gathering of sporty cars and especially Porsche replicars. Looking like a nice tour on Friday afternoon and then the big tour on Saturday with optional tour,(s) on Sunday. Southern Oregon in October is drop dead gorgeous with warm days and cool nights, perfect! All info above!

Bruce
Bruce - I did get your message - I've been driving back and forth between Reno working and trying to help Steve painting two cars...

When I get back into town the end of the week I'll get the Friday arrangements taken care of. Looks like the Sikorsky Helicopter re-build shop followed by a short drive and a tasty treet (local beer, local cheese, local chocolate). I'll fill all-ya-all (especially you Bruce) in on the details.

angela
If we get the "green light" for the Sikorsky tour, we'll be going to a company called Erickson Air-Crane. They bring in Sikorsky helicopters in a usually inoperable condition, completely rebuild them and use or sell the finished ones. They are amazing machines.

They are built as "sky-cranes". They have two engines 4,500 horsepower EACH and are purpose built for heavy lifting. They are used in forestry, forest fire and other odd jobs such as carrying a 45 foot bus for a movie shoot (an easy feat for these machines).

Angela,

I took a drive up around Fish Lake, and Hyatt Lake and Lake of the Woods today. Stopped into the cafe at Hyatt and they will be open thru October so that could fit for a lunch, Lake of the Woods cafe closes in September so that is out. Too bad as that is so neat up there.

Have fun in Reno, my favorite town in Nevada and give me a call when you get back. Erickson sounds like a popular choice too!

How come Steve painted his car black??? LOL

Bruce
Funny story about that Bruce... The guy with the 993 wanted the car repainted so it was the same color as our spyder. The 993 was factory black, but there's a little brown or something in the black. Not pure black. So, Steve repainted it.

And Steve's cabby, well, you know, it is gonna be BLACK! He put 5 layers of clear on it...

angela
All-ya-all don't forget about the SOT! 90% sure we are going to the Sikorsky place on Friday (more on that later, the fella who give permission is on vacation).

If they turn us down, I have something else fun in mind! We can go to the Oregon House of Mystery aka Oregon Vortex! Quirky place. Stop for Chocolate or some other local treat on the way back in. Nice drive out there too.

angela
Hey sports fans, we are getting close to the SOT, Southern Oregon Cruise. It will be Oct, 5,6,7 in Medford, Oregon. This is always a low key, fun driving and social event to get the final drives in before winter shows up. The weather is always just about perfect to ensure top down driving.

We plan on leaving from the Red Lion Inn Medford around 2pm on Friday, Oct 5 for a drive to one of Southern Oregon's attractions and then back to the hotel for some refreshments and possible swimming at the pool. Weather here allows that with no problem. Bring your swim suits if you're so inclined. After some fun and snacking we'll head up to Porters again for a fine dinner. Short walk of 2 blocks so we can leave the cars at the hotel. (good plan)!

Saturday we leave on the day long tour and sightseeing. Angela Lane has promised a great route again this year, different from those used in previous years. She will lead the charge in her Spyder.

All hotel and specifics are at the top of this thread. I have worked out a favorable rate at the hotel so make sure you mention you are with the Speedster Club for the lower rate.

Any questions, just drop me an e mail and you will get a prompt reply.
Hope to see you all in a few weeks, let us know if yau are coming and how many so we can plan on food and drink.

Thanks, Bruce Williams and Angela Lane

Bruce,
I will be coming up, unfortunetly, I will not be able to get the Friday off. So....I will be leaving Dixon around 7pm and driving to the RedLion.

I look at it as an interesting time to go, no traffic, cool temperatures, little construction. Man, what a drive!

Anyone in the Bay area, Sacramento area or points northward want to share in the experience?
The Red Lions computer is up and running again. There is still time to get in on the fun and social togetherness we have enjoyed the past few years. Oct 5-7 is the date. A short tour on Friday afternoon kicks off the fun weekend. We'll probably leave the Red Lion about two PM or so Friday afternoon and then back to the swimming pool activities that may or may not include swimming. Your choice.

If anyone needs directions to the Red Lion, let me know or Google the web site for Red Lion, Medford.
I am waiting to hear from the guy that bought my speedy, he lives in Portland, but other than him, that's it. You lurkers that are fairly close, this is a great driving and social event, maybe the last time to get your cars some excercise before the dreaded winter. It is really nice here so you'll be missing a fun event. I kind of figured we'd get a few more Bay area people up here, you know who you are, lol. And the Grass Valley gang too. Not very far and what a weekend it will be!

Bruce
Dale,
We had a bit of an exodus from my Spyder buddies. A few weeks back, a couple of them came up with a fabulous idea for a run (so cool I would join them if I could). It is scheduled on the same weekend as SOT...

That incident is what prompted me to suggest a CALENDAR!!!!

angela
You Bay area people should come up thru the State of Jefferson, over the pass into the State of Oregon. Watch for the Jefferson sign before you head over the pass. It is there! We will explain the State Of Jefferson when you arrive in Medford. Really, you don't need a Speedster to join our group. I will be driving a roadster but it isn't a Porsche clone so you can run what you brung.

We'd like a few more cars for the fun tour and socializing. A great group so far but looking for a few more to round off the roster.

Let us know!
The fall colors are starting to show up in the valley, even better in the higher elevations. The yellows are going to be bright this year as will the reds and oranges. You don't want to miss our Southern Oregon Fall colors this year so you better make plans now to welcome Fall with us. "Come on up or down."

Still plenty of time to make reservations and plans. The tour this year should be great following Angela and the Spyder thru the twisties. Bring your cameras as there will be some great photo ops.
Hi Sports fans.

This just in. We will be leaving the Red Lion about 2:30 PM on Friday October 5 for our "Mystery" tour. This is a tour that is short but mysterious, sure to please. After the tour we will take the short drive back to the Red Lion for indulging in some uniquely Southern Oregon food and drink around the secluded pool we enjoyed last year. Two pools there, the "big" one and the smaller friendlier one, thats us! Good food, drink, conversation and possibly a lie or two.

Be There,

Bruce and Angela
Pre-drove part of the tour route today. I saw two flocks of turkeys! I had to stop dead in the middle of the road to let one of the flock cross. They sorta mosied along...

I know the weather has been flaky this week, but cautious optimism for this weekend:

http://www.accuweather.com/forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=1&zipcode=97501&metric=0

According to Accuweather - we should have clear skies for Friday, Saturday and Sunday! Can't wait to see you guys tomorrow!
