A hell of an expensive car!
I read the article when a friend linked to it.
It's not so much a "hey, somebody did this" as a "hey, wouldn't it be cool if somebody did this?" I'd perk right up if somebody actually does it.
Paging Danny P...
I'd be surprised if "someone" of our major and well respected builders is not planning right now of a mid engine speedster.
I am far from being a car builder but as I see it, if you take a Subaru ( doesn't have to be Soob ) FWD front end and move it to the rear in a custom box frame ( Beck and IM has variations of them and capabilities of mods) and they've both figured out how to cool them and already have good front ends, then what's the holdup ? There seems to be a market for them.
Maybe I'm underestimating the loyalty to air cooled / rear engines and that's ok too. I also know nothing about long distance marketing strategies in the rear engine air cooled market place.
Hell....please someone give the go ahead and take some well needed pressure of SAS.
Steve Lawings needs a break........
I almost talked to Henry into installing a Water-cooled flat six Boxster engine in my IM. The engine was new crate 2.5 liter. That would have been fricken awesome as the sounds would have been off the charts:-)
David, it's being engineered now and will take a bit more time, but it's coming! Stay Tuned...
Boxster that would have been really cool to do, but I'd rather have the price point of a subie engine.
I briefly considered going the BRZ route. Lighter with more hp (but less torque) than the 2.5 Suby. Somebody is already making the electronics to make this work....then I came to my senses.
Price & electronics will hold this back. Somebody will develop the electronics eventually...
I have a good friend at PCNA who visits regularly and we were recently speaking about this engine. Adaptor plate, exhaust, fitment, etc... that is all the easy stuff. The nightmare will be wiring, immobilizer, security checks, etc... Hell, the new Porsche ECU knows if you swap a door handle, has a "PIN" number for the gauge cluster, monitors fuel level and temperature, just to name a few of the issues... Eventually some dotcom genius will crack the computer for mods and then we can piggyback off of that to use it as a standalone, but until then it's nice to dream.
Yes, I could well imagine the electronics nightmare to install of one those engines in another chassis. So much on new cars is controlled, monitored, adjusted, etc. by the ECU, that doing this won't be an easy task.
I'm happy with my air cooled flat six
Carey,
I figure the VW TDI emission avoidance team is looking for work:-0
