Need some advice on appropriate transaxle gearing for good highway use and also good accell up through the gears. Final drive ratio and various gear ratio's?
I'm ordering the motor from CB and need to order a swing axle box with the right final drive, 1-4 gear ratios and other mods. Rancho? Wright? KCR? Other changes I need to make like mounts and added bracing? I don't launch hard or shift hard, but do like the improved torque, and don't use / need over 5500 RPM. I'd like to be able to highway cruise @ 80 MPH and be under 4,000 RPM. Advice from those that have made these changes to their speedy and what you might do differently if you had to do it over again?

Also, does Tiger @ A1 do the ovaled tip single center outlet exhaust?

Thxs in advance for great advice...the combined experiece & knowledge on the SOG is amazing.

Doug,

You may well get differing opinions than mine. But, my opinion is go with a RP ratio of either 4.12:1 or 3.88:1. I would also get a much different 1st and 2nd gear combo than most VW trannys have...most of them are 3.80:1 first gear.

I used 2.58 first, 1.86 2nd, 1.26 3rd, and .93 fourth. WIth a 3.88 RP I think you will find this works pretty well....I am running a 3.44 and that is "too much" in this car...at least with the .93 4th gear.

If you plan on burnouts and the like you will want welderd 3rd and 4th gears as well as strenghtened side plates and the like.

Personally, a Kennedy stage 1 pressure plate is enough for my driving, I have a stage 2 and I don't need it..... depends upon how you plan to drive...

I have had 2 Speedsters and one Spyder and have used similar gearing in 2 of the 3 vehicles. IMO having the 3.80:1 first gear is pretty much a wasted gear in our cars. 6000 rpm in first with a 3.80 yields 30mph....

Having a 3.88 or 4.12 RP will allow you to use a Quaife LSD if need be...I would only recommend one of those if you are planning to race the car...in some fashion....other wise a super diff should be adaquate for street driving.
