TP, any routes yet. I know El Dorado county like the back of my hand.
There are some interesting side roads out of Hangtown but #49 North from #50 is hard to beat as it is winding and goes past Marshalls gold discovery site. They charge admission but ifn we were just to pass thru they might wave the fee. Then its on to Cool and the CURVY road into the canyon and back up to Auburn. Id be willing to go to Auburn and then backtrack home.
Last year we started in Auburn, through Grass Valley via country roads, up Hwy 20 through Tahoe National Forest. Up Historic highway 40, across Donner Summit. On to Hwy 89 to Tahoe City, through West Shore, past Emerald Lake, into South Shore, down Hwy 50 to Placerville. On to Hwy 49 through Coloma and up to Cool, down the hill and back to Auburn. The trip was a little over 200 miles. It did get a little hot on the last leg of the drive.
Last year it took a little over 5 hours, with a lunch break. This year I would suggest more stops (just to cool off!) and plan more like 7 hours.
Christine, this is a day trip. However, there is so much to do in the area I can see it easily become an extended event in the future.
Anyone, please feel free to make comments or suggestions.
I do this drive occasionally and am so hell-bent on blasting through, I forget how beautiful this area is.
Hey kids!
Wish I could make the scene for sure but no can do.
My retinal detachment repair surgery has gone very well but I'm still in recovery. I'm not allowed to fly in a plane or go to the mountains because of the therapeutic gas bubble that is still shrinking inside my eye.

If you have a strong stomach, here's what I went through.

DETAILS:

We'll meet at the Holiday Inn in Auburn at Hwy 80 and Hwy 49 at 9:30am, Saturday, 8/13. http://www.auburnhi.com/directions.htm
For those who are interested it's a decent place to stay the night. There's a Max's Diner in the hotel for a good breakfast and In 'n Out is right next door.
We'll proceed up Hwy 49 to some backroads through Grass Valley, then up Hwy 20 through Tahoe National Forest.
The route will take us up Historic 40 through Donner Pass and on to Lake Tahoe.
we'll break for a picnic lunch at Meeks Bay in Westshore: http://www.meeksbayresort.com/index.aspx
It's a nice place to picnic and there's a snack shop. There's a $7 per car charge for day use.
We'll continue on past Emerald Bay, around the lake and head down Hwy 50 towards Placervile, then back onto Hwy 49 through Coloma, Cool, etc., and back to the Holiday Inn in Auburn.
Long day
Long trip (but you can bail when/wherever.)
We can discuss dinner for Friday and Saturday nights if anyone is interested.
I love my tow bar Jim. It gives me so many more options. I added tow lights ala Wild Bill Drayer's excellent design. I had to have separate tail and turn/stop lights due to some weirdness with the Jaguar's electrical system, but they work great. I have permanent wiring running underneath the car and it makes it very nice to be able to slide them over the nerf bars and just plug and go.

See you all in Tahoe.

One week to go, kats & kittens!
Don't forget to pack a lunch.
Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, it's gonna be hot.
9:30 Saturday morning, 8/13, at the Holiday Inn parking lot in Auburn.
Anyone interested in dinner Friday night?
Not that it matters but how many are coming? I can try to have route directions if I know who's coming.
200 miles of curvy roads and beautiful scenery. And a history of cannibalism...;-)
Cannibalism? You should have reminded us of that little historical tidbit months ago!
I'd have revised my schedule! ;)

That IS going back a ways -- 1847?
Any chance you could take a photo of the cars by a historical placard?
There might be one for Cannibal Phil (whose given name was Charles Gardner -- holy crap!) that would provide a nice SOC tie-in:
