3 point or lap belt?

I had Carey put in lap belts after the first season (along with the hydraulic clutch).  I like them way better than the 3-pt and feel more secure.  Carey installs Simpsons, but Lane & others have installed Crows, which are probably a better value.  This summer, I got caught at a Michigan seat belt enforcement area.  The cop looked inside the car and said nice car, so I guess he was satisfied with the Simpsons.

It's time for a reality-check. Your doors are hollow pieces of fiberglass. Your windshield does not fasten to anything metal at all-- it bolts to the fiberglass it sits on. You are driving around in a four-wheeled motorcycle.

 

If a 3-point belt makes you happy, then go for it. I put my 3" Simpson lap-belts in because they look '50s boy-racer-ish, and I use them. It'll keep me from getting thrown out of the car in a bad wreck, so they can more easily find my body.

 

A loud horn, adequate power, and a defensive attitude is your best defense.

As usual, Stan hit the nail directly on the head (convenient for the cleanup crew). The Crow 3" belts cost me about $85 and look way better than the "factory" versions and I do like looking all '50's boy-racer-ish too. Someone described mine as F-16 belts.

Stan said it perfectly---"a 4 wheel motorcycle".  Bingo.

Stan you read my mind, the 3pt belt is a pain and don't know what it is doing for me. Is this something easy enough to do myself? I like the Simpsons http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SIM-29000BK/, do they just bolt into existing holes. Will email Carey as well.

Not only is it easy...I actually installed mine myself (whew!)! The in-frame threaded bolt on the transmission cowling is a pain to get started but if you're lucky it should take you all of 30 minutes. Piece-O-Cake.

It's your car (and wallet), Joe. Personally, I'd save a few bucks and go Crow...http://www.crowenterprizes.com/...nice quality and they should hold you in place for the cleanup crew.

FYI, anyone looking to install a fire extinguisher? I just Velcroed mine and it holds to my Beck carpeting perfectly fine without having to drill holes through the floor. Plus I can just yank it off for anti-theft purposes if I want to, or change positions too.

Joe, these are almost identical to my Simpsons except color.  Mine are black.

BTW, Joe. If these seem a little mammoth for you, they do come in a 2" size as well.

Now, let's move on to the subject of pedal options...I hate mine.

I found them thick, at first, but now find them to be comfortable.

Thanks for all the pics Rich. Yes waiting on the new shifter, and need to get a fire extinguisher; great idea on the velcro. Agree on the pedals not a fan. 

Joe, if you like your car now, your going to love it with the CSP Shifter.  When coming to a  fast right turn you can confidently slap down from 3rd to second.

Go with the 2" the 3"s are a bit bulky and heavy in the lap but look way cool.

New lap belts are ordered from Summit, thanks to everyone who chimed in. Now on to fire suppression, pedals, wet clutch, cup holders, marchal fogs .... does this ever end. 

Apparently not.  My motto for this winter is everything except paint.  However, I feel that I'm down to the nice to have things now. Natalie is running greaty!

Got the belts installed this morning, now waiting the new shifter.

Thanks Stephen, I went back and forth on Simpson and Crowe belts. Carey from Special Edition helped with final decision. 

Joe, what made you choose the Crowe belts over Simpson?  I ask because I am going to have to choose for my build soon.

It was the recommendation from Carey at Beck, it's what he installs in his cars. I went with the 3" wide and 62" long.
