Would like to see pics of other companies 356 sub chassis'....

If we were talking a 1969 Karmann Ghia (or bug) I could tell you how to do an air ride system, what to narrow and how to set it all up to lay flat.

But we are talking a 356... I am curious to see other people's/companies sub chassis'.

Looking at my old CMC, it is a balljoint and IRS.

I see the front nose brace mounts to the outer area of the front beam, close to the shock towers. This means that to narrow the beam will require me to modify the nose brace. If I narrow the beam 1" per side I might be ok. But I dont see 2" per side. Also the shock towers might require me to cut and re-fiberglass the inner side where the shock towers will hit.

The rear chassis has its support running front to rear above the axles in the same spot I would normally put a cross beam for the rear airbags. I would rather not weld brackets to the sub chassis due to wanting the body to be able to be removed without touching the suspension. If I build off the sub chassis then the suspension will have to come off with the body....OR.... if the body has to come off will the sub chassis stay on the pan???? Anyone able to answer this? I have all the build documents some place, just not sure where I put them. Building the rear air off the sub chassis "IF" it would stay on the pan during disassembly would be a great option.

Needless to say this will be a bit more complicated and interesting design compared to the Ghia or others... I'm up for it still, just cutting and welding. Haahhahahaha.

To be honest,  the biggest issue I have right now is getting the rear torsion bars to release. In all my 50+ VWs I have never had this issue.

Grrrrrr.

Oh well.... so if you have any sub chassis pics I would be curious to see how they look compared to the CMC I have.

Thanks again

My '88 CMC came with sub chassis and doors mounted (they called it a deluxe kit).  I understand (see old build manuals) that early models had separate sub-frame and even fiberglass kick panels.  I'd think it would be very difficult to remove sub-frame.  It seems to be both glued/fiberglassed and riveted to the fiberglass body.  Once mine was mated to VW pan - per directions, I even fiberglassed that joint.  I'm guessing with angle grinder and a sawzall it could be separated but not easily!

1980...my kit came with the frame bonded to the body, doors mounted, boxes for the frunk and engine compartment hinges installed.  The photo appears to be same as 1980 and 2009.

Somehow comforting to know some things never change.

Why would you want to remove the body?

Jim... thank you. Like I said I did not know if there were bonded areas...  now that I reflect and the info from Wolfgang....I also remember seeing rivots, this would imply a bonding.

I dont necessarily want to remove the body but if narrowing the front or rear would cause an unforeseen interference I would like to be able to lift, address, lower and possibly need do it again.

Also I have carpet glued in areas. It would be nice to pull this carpet out and clean it up possibly paint of make inserts. . . . Would it require a body lift? I have no idea but I dont want to be limited.

With the amount of work I will be putting into the car I dont want to have one small overlooked item sneak up on me.

Thanks again.
