I and a buddy picked up a pretty much complete engine, drive train, and front suspension off a 1964 356c coupe. The odometer showed 69,000 miles, and from what one can see with a quick inspection that mileage may be correct. The engine has matching numbers on all 3 case parts. It appears as if the case has never been split, but it does appear as if the heads have been off and the valves ground. The seller kept the carbs, which were pretty rough and not worth nearly the value he assigned them. They were 40mm Webers, so they were not original. The transmission looks good as do the brakes (aluminum drums) on all 4 wheels. All the brake drums are useable and generally pretty clean. Backing plates need to be cleaned and painted as does the engine tin etc. We have the original heat boxes and the like but they are a bit ratty and not wanted for a Speedster or Spyder in most cases anyhow. If someone is interested in all or part drop me a note, would be nice to see the engine and tranny go into a Speedster...by the way, we have the entire front beam too..... we are selling this as is, it was run briefly last month, it seems to have good compression, I would plan to do an overhaul, not run the engine as is. I am more than happy to send photos to interested parties....

I'd post to a 356/912 site (or SAMBA) - IMHO has far more value ($ and historic) to a restorer than to be used in a replica. Might be somehting to put on ebay --- you may be surprised in the interest.
Jim, was the rest of the 356C not worth saving? I hate to see the old ones bite the dust. It may be a romanticized view, but somehow when I read something like your post, I get flashes of some 356 fan with tons of money and a vision to return a rusted relic back to its glory state. Sigh! Hoss
regards saving the car, that would have been my choice also. The car sat outside in the Houston area for 20+ years with the windows all removed. So, the floor sheet metal was all gone, under carriage wise. However, I have seen much worse saved. Unfortunately, the guy who bought the car is putting a shortened VW chassis under it. He had already chopped out the entire drive train as well as the entire front end, torsion tubes and all, when I found out about it and rescued the engine, tranny, and other parts. It is very much a shame as he made a $7500 car worth perhaps $3000 with only about 500 hours of labor...when he is done. But it will certainly be an "OUTLAW".
In any event, we saved what we could. And yes, I am well aware of Samba as well as ebay and have been active on both for a long time. I will most likely advertise the "stuff" on the 356 registry site...it is a small but select audience for 356 parts. I mentioned it here just in case there was some interest before I went to the registry. I suspect it will bring more $$ there than any place else, but sometimes it really isn't about the money....
