Henry is in the planning stages of the 3rd annual IM BBQ and I thought I would pass along what I know so far. The current plan is for the weekend of July 14-16 and would include a BBQ lunch at Intermeccanica Friday then a ferry to Nanaimo and on to Parksville for the night. Saturday we would drive across the island to Long Beach (awesome driving road), have lunch, and then drive back to Parksville for dinner, and another night of partying, um, I mean socializing. Sunday we would drive to Dave and Linda Holmwood's for a BBQ lunch/pool party before we need to part company and go our separate ways.

Dave and Linda are helping organize this as it's in their back yard, and Linda is saying that we need to get a reasonable head count so we can get rooms booked very soon. This is a popular area and the rooms will fill up. Linda knows the people in Parksville and can get us a room rate of about US$55/Cdn$60 per night so the cost will be quite low for 2 nights. The hotel is right across the road from the beach.

You can attend just the IM BBQ, or skip the IM BBQ and meet us in Parksville, or do the whole thing. But post what your plans are so Henry and Linda know how many to expect.

I jumped the gun a bit on the room rate. It turns out that Parksville is becoming a major tourist destination and the best rate Linda can get on the hotel she was recommending is US$85 per night for a room with 1 bed, and US$110 per night for a room with 2 beds. ($100 and $125 Canadian). Linda is looking around to see if there is something more reasonable.
A few more details have been finalized. We are staying at the Old Dutch Inn in Parksville for Friday and Saturday night. Rooms are Cdn$100 and $125 per night. The area is a very popular tourist spot so you will need to reserve your hotel room sooner rather than later. If you think there is a chance you can make it, you might consider booking a room and if it turns out you are unable to attend you can always cancel up to 48 hours before arrival. The number is 1 800 661 0199 and their web site is www.olddutchinn.com.

60 days and counting!

For those that are coming to the BBQ at Intermeccanica on Friday July 14, I understand that the start time is about 10am, and the BBQ will be for lunch. That will give us time to visit and eat, and still catch an early enough Ferry that we can get to the hotel for dinner.

I will call Henry and ask what Ferry we are trying to catch. Then we can book reservations for the Ferry to make sure we get on. I'll try to have that for you in the next few days.
First the news;
There is a world renown Mercedes restoration shop in Victoria and Henry and Alex have arranged for those who are around to have a tour of his shop. The last I heard, there were at least 2 gullwing 300SL there among other classic Mercedes cars.

It's time to step up and be counted. I spoke with Linda today about accommodations for Sunday night. That's for those that are going to visit Rudy's Mercedes shop Monday, or those staying late at the BBQ at Dave and Linda's. She has found a place about 10 minutes away for about $65 a night. What she needs to know is how many rooms to reserve at the "group rate".

Just to be clear, she is not booking the rooms. We all need to do that individually. She is just reserving them for our group.

And while we are at it, we might as well get the other counts. So please reply with the number of people attending each stage of the tour.

BBQ at IM

BBQ at Dave and Linda's

Hotel Sunday night

Tour of Rudy's Mercedes shop

6 weeks and counting.
That's all for now.
WHOOOOAAAA!!!! Is IM building gullwings? Goodness, if they are, that might be enough for me to fuhgetabout a 904!

Are they? And are the road pics Sea to Sky Highway? Drove that on the way to a bike race (w/pickup truck - gahh) and thouht that would be THE best road to drive the spydie on.

Intermeccanica is building gullwings. NO NOT REALLY. Part of the IM BBQ weekend festivities was a tour of a world renown Gullwing resto shop. I guess world renown to Mercedes groupies, I never heard of it. Anyway, it was on Monday and Michele and I, Gail and Scott, and Paul had to head home before taking that tour. I understand it was a wonderful tour and the cars were not only very well done, but very expensive. Those that went, loved it!

Angela, the road goes from one side of Vancouver Island to the other. It is probably 3X better than the Sea to Sky, one of the roads Henry uses to test his cars, and sends his customers on to test their new cars.
Ahh... Resto shop tour - now that I would have LOVED to do! If anyone could build a true tribute quality gullwing it would be IM - but I suspect their speedster business keeps them more than busy. My grandfather had a gullwing when I was a child. Sort of an ivory color with a deep red interior, have a few pics stashed away.

He sold it in the late sixties. It was "just another used furrin car" at that time...
