Hello friends,
I feel bad for posting this... but I have read several threads and was unable to find what I am looking for.
I have a CMC speedster and was interested in cramming a spare under the hood. I have been searching for a 4" wide 4x130 bolt pattern spare rim and have not been able to locate anything like it. Does this unicorn even exist? Let alone finding the rubber for it?
If I hadn't searched for hours by myself, I would not bother you fine people.

VW made a 4-1/2 x 15 rim lays in the trunk over the battery and on the fuel tank...if you have not bought a battery a lower profile would be a plus but not necessary.

I will try and find the 4.5" online. I had read other posts where people were having rubbing issues with a 4.5", but I'd imagine the gas tank and battery have something to do with that.
My battery is brand new... so I am stuck with that.
Because my trunk is so ugly, I don't have a lot of pictures handy for it. Here's what I had on hand

1968-1971 all had 4Jx15 rims - 1972 introduced the OEM 4.5Jx15 rims. I double-checked the OEM sales brochure on SAMBA. Size is stamped on rim.

Thanks Wolfgang! Are those old rims the same thing as the link I posted above from So Cal Parts? If so, I may want to just pay the extra 30 or 40 dollars and have a clean new rim.
You should not run into much of a figment problem... it will need to use a smaller - thinner tire. I used a 165R15... recommended by VS, builder Kirk D. He was awesome. You will have to find the “ right spot to lay it” to avoid any possible interference, and then add something to secure the rim in place.
enclosed are some pics of my car before I converted it to the 205 bolt pattern (first using Cop1, later using vintage rims), after the conversion, and another owners cleaner idea for securing the tire. My frunk has seen it all since 2013 and they all fit. Fortunately I have only needed to use it 3 times.
and my battery is regular size.

I reused the same tire when I upgraded to the 5 bolt pattern... 165R15.
Ask forum members to see if anyone has one laying around. Many members have gone through conversions to 5wide... and these things don’t have much of a resale value... I just gave away my five 4 bolt rims, including the spare. Needed to make room in my storage unit....
if not, SoCal or Cip1 has them new for under 70$

Yes, they should do the trick. Since it's a spare you could use a 155R-15 (a little smaller than a 165) or even a 145 or 135 to save on frunk space. The only issue will be where to put the dead tire should the spare be needed...
Here are some more pix of the (4-bolt) spare kit that VS was putting on their cars about five years ago.
It's a 4.5" J Chinese rim, with a 135R x 15 Nankang tire. I think it's the same as this rim from Summit Racing.
It's better than a compact spare, but not much. Technically, the tire is rated for higher road speeds than a compact spare, but I wouldn't try using it to set any lap times at the Nurburgring. Maybe just get to a tire shop where you can install a real tire.
BTW, this setup just barely fits in my car. The tire just rubs the carpet on the frunk lid as it is.
I carry a large trash bag to put the road wheel and tire in if I have to mount the spare. That lets me put the road wheel in the back seat without trashing the interior.
So CAL Parts wheel is 4.5" wide. I wouldn't spend $70 plus a new tire for a spare. Look around on local CL or at a VW show (or find a local club and ask there). As others said they can be had free. The CMC build manual has you using a T115 (? check) spare tire.
