Seal,Last year[2003], when I was getting together info for my car to be built I did some research on hard tops. I received a picture from Dean Rogers [C.B.Motorsports] but was advised that the car was in Brazil and the top was no longer available from Chamonix. I was told that Russ Rodriguez [Fibersteel] was working on a hardtop that would open at the rear to allow access to the engine, but have heard no more on that. I was told that Thunder Ranch could possibly make one,but did not check because I'm not sure it would fit my body without extensive mods. After I got my car[a Beck] I put the soft top on and discovered several things that made me decide against a hard top. First, you have to remove the top to get into the engine bay.2nd,there is no method of ventilation;the side curtians are not sliders so you can't open them as vents or to gain access to the handle to open the door. [I guess you would have to unsnap the top to reach inside]3rd, with no heat or defog system you would not be able clear the wind shield inside. 4th, and most important, the car is extremely difficult to get into with the top up and a passenger on board.[The distance from the door sill to the top is too short for normal beings]You literally have to crawl across both seats to get your legs in and then sit up.Based on all of that I decided I didn't need a hard top.The soft top makes a good sunscreen and when the wife goes along I simply release the top latches from the windshield, pull the top back to the bow ,get in, and relatch the top from the inside.Good Luck in your search but think of the problems before you spend a lot of time and money on an imperfect solution.
hi, I am someone else...I have my spyder with a soft top. I saw a photo of an european spyder ...it was well done and nice.
most of the tops need some redesign to work. If the owner is 6 + it will not work. I got this car from an owner that was eating moskitos as he drove... I assume that it was not fun for him.
RD need to set the new top as a foldable like the t tops on th early camaros or so.
I have some ideas and no time...one of those things. for example, the 4 link suspension for IRS on a mid engine set up....inovation such as that is what we need applied to the hard top. well some day ....
