Does anyone know if the wheels on the 58 Carrera had studs in the back or both in the back and front or not at all. The real one I saw in this area had studs only in the back.

I'm not positive, but I think the studs were on all four wheels. Maybe check the 356 Club site for more research...

John leader had it on all 4 wheels on his JPS Carerra.

Scott/John or anyone with studs. I bought 2.25 inch long studs. They look a little long. Would 1.5 or 1.75 look better? And are yours black or cadmium color? Thanks
A Little off topic but, How hard is it to install the studs? Im a fan of the look and will be running wide 5's with no hubcaps. Disc in front, Drum in rear.

the surface inside the drum is machine a bit to make a flat surface then the stud is pressed in.
Paul - My drums and front rotors are wide five from AC Industries. They used 12mm stud bolts. The studs I initially bought are 12mm x 12mm 1.50 and overall length 2.25". The 1.50 is the thread pitch. In otherwords they are threaded and simply screw into the drum and rotor. I just don't like the look as they stick out from the nuts quite a bit. Hope this answered your question. Here's a picture:

On the Drag Beetle, the techs like to see long studs, open lugs, and around an inch of thread past the lug nut. We deep threaded them into the drums and hit the protruding threads with with the welder. More to provide a "head" to prevent the stud from ever backing out, than really expecting the weld to hold steel and cast iron together for any length of time.

This may be a stupid question but I gotta ask it, Why not just use lug nuts? Is it an esthetic thing? Some of you may know I'm about to enter the "wide 5" world soon. I ordered lug nuts for the new drums/rotors, are they going to fit or do I have to put studs in?
Terry - I think mine stick out about a 1/4 inch more. They look kinda funny. I think I will go with 1.75 inch studs.

I'd imagine using the long studs came from the racing segment. It's easier to hang wheels on studs during a pitstop as opposed to fumbling with the old bolt type. I use 'em and like them much.

Cool. Thanks Warren. I just want to get everything ON the car first and then I'll sort out some of the esthetics stuff. I think I like the stud set up better in the long run. With the drum covers it'll be a bit of a pain with the bolts, but hey, how often to have to take me off?
