Hi All,

I have a 59 speedster I am looking to sell ( don't know much about it) purchased it 2 years ago from affordable autos in Oregon. Have a young daughter and just cant enjoy the car like we had hoped.

Car is clean mechanically, just had one of the premier VW mechanics in Seattle go through her and replace all the break, drums, master cylinder as well as tune the engine ( no leaks). Interior is also in great shape as you can tell from the pictures.

Car is turn key, needs nothing to be a daily driver.

Looking for 14,500.00 ( not in a hurry so please be reasonable if contacting me).

Thanks,

Mark

Glenn,

While no one can guarantee what CA DMV will do in any instance, out-of-state replicas are usually not a problem.  If a car was built in CA, but registered out-of-state immediately after build, then the owner tries to switch it to CA ASAP, that can raise a warning flag with DMV, as some other owners have found.

Since this replica seems to have been registered for some time, I don't see a problem.  It would help to know how it's registered in OR, not that the form of registration would be a dealbreaker to CA DMV.  If you know a particular DMV employee who is knowledgeable regarding replica registration, call him/her with current registration info on the car.  Good luck in whatever you do.  It can take some time to register in CA, but it's doable.

If it is built on a VW pan and registered as a pre 74 VW the DMV here goes pretty easy on you. If it is a manufactured car like a Beck or Intermeccanica you will have a tough time getting it registered but it is possible under the SB 100 provisions.

The DMV wants to see no less than 7500 miles on a used car to register it here in CA. There has been quite a bit written previously about it here so take a look.

A replica or kit car needs to have been built more than 15 years ago to get imported to Canada. You will need to provide documentation supported with correct vin numbers etc. to prove it was built over 15 years ago. If it is titled say a '69 VW with matching vin numbers  on the chassis, it will not get into Canada. Period. To export a motor vehicle from the US to Canada you must surrender the title or ownership to the US side of the border 72 hours before you bring the vehicle. The US side inspects the car and the paperwork and gives you export papers to take to the Canadian side along with the car. When cleared into Canada, the paperwork and the vehicle need to be taken to a Provincial License Bureau and if all ducks are in a row, a new ownership will be issued. Lant provides inexpensive insurance in Canada. We were able to travel from Boise, Idaho to an Upstate New York Port of Entry with a travel sticker/permit on board. It should have been affixed to the windshield but it blocked my view so I just stuck it under the seat.

David:  Are you sure on this? I brought in an older IM a few years ago, and it came in as a VW, as that was what was on the vin and title.

I had to do the 72 hours notice delivery ahead of time, and did have a little issue with a young female customs person.  She saw the speedster on the truck, and would not accept that it was titled as a VW.  An older male finally came over, knew what I was doing, and processed the paper work.

Paper work is key here, as that is what the customs officers work on.

That is the info I was given back in Sept 2010, Bob. That really limited our search and I was lucky to find our car in Boise, Idaho that was built in 1983 and titled as an IM. I was warned by the Canuck border people not to try the VW titled procedure as I might be buying a car that would not get through the process. Perhaps things have changed, when did you bring yours in ?
