OK, another stupid question:

I got these cool gauges in a box of stuff for my Pre-A.

And always figured that I'd pull the bezels, pointers, and faces off of them and re-work a pair of modern VDO gauges by using the early faces and stuff to create a sweet pair of 12 volt vintage looking gauges.

Easy Peasy!

But THEN I found THIS on Ebay ! !

So, it looks like I have, like $400.00 worth of Porsche gauges that I was just about ready to dig into. Now I'm wondering if there are some sort of voltage step down devices that will work so that I can run these 6 volt gauges in my 12 car as-is? I have a new VDO oil pressure sender, but that's it. I need thingies to make these work. At first I thought that an amp gauge was just a measuring device regardless of the voltage going through it, but it turns out that even that will need to be re-wired or have an adapter of some sort placed in line to make it all work correctly.

I could use some help ! ! The really, kinda sad part is that even if I can't figure out how to make these work as they are, I STILL have two holes in my dash and nothing to fill them so, if there's no solution, I'm just gonna gut them as I first planned.

I figure that green faced Porsche gauges in this condition are rare, and since I'm the one who has to stare at the dash all day, it's going to look as sweet as can be and these gauge faces ARE sweet ! ! !

Thanks ! !

Something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/12-Volt-to-6-Volt-Voltage-Reducer_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem260348446241QQitemZ260348446241QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

You take the wire from the fuse 12V goes to this, and on the other end you wire the power 6V to the guages..... simple enough.

There is a trick using diodes as voltage droping devices.....Each diode would shave 0.7v off the source voltage......You need to know the max current draw needed in order to specify the correct diode(s).......If you have the specs, I've got about 1000 1N4002 diodes....They are good for 200piv and 1 amp draw......Just a thought....
That sounds perfect for the oil pressure gauge. Since the AMP gauge is an in line piece that's measuring such a heavy draw, I don't see how a voltage drop device could be wired in. Any help? Seems like something that the Model T guys might do all of the time when they upgrade to 12 volts or install an aftermarket starter or magneto or whatever, doesn't it?
