Looking to change from a black plastic column with turn signal and wiper arm to an earlier style 67 column. Pan is a 1969.  Current column has the caged style column. Just installed new TRW box and German rubber rag joint--not a bad job with gas tank out. So what issues will I have with electrical and alignment switching to a 67 column? I have a "home made" (see pic) electrical system that is looking tired so that will probably be updated too--never got a diagram from PO and colors do not match CMC or Bentley manuals. Plans are to have a key on the dash. Car was built in early 80's.

1967 plain columns and w/ shaft are rare anymore on the Samba . Maybe Greg at VOV or Carey at Special Edition care " steer " you in the right source direction ~  I have made then for the flared fender speedsters using 2" OS  stainless tube and a 1-7/8 OD x 7/8" ID bearing at either end ( eBay) but the stock signal switch will not fit and I have to use a universal switch that has an ugly clamp.

I have no recent experience with a 67 or earlier column.  VW changed the column for 68 - 70 and then changed it again in 71.

The 68-70 supposedly did not have the wiper switch on the column, just the directional (and a key lock at the base near the dash).  The wiper lever appeared on the column in 1971, If my memory serves.

Anyway, if you’re looking for a plain column, then any year from 55-67 is about the same, to broaden your search.
