Please clue me in as to 'pick up' :) I am just getting into this, and ( not air cooled ) and, and, I have been driving nine to 18,22 speeds. so I have the same question. I understand that there is a gentileman

in Ft. Laderdale who does these (901's / 5'spd's). Sort of a Jake Rabby of trannys. I grew up with Don Gartlets,(He tought my Mom how to drive), and Don Prudhomme. But I like YOU guys. DOUG........You can't call me Dougie TILL ya drove with me. :)
The problem is that it has an Empi style trigger shifter, with a ring, that I have to pull to engage 1st and reverse. It's a PITA to have to pull the ring every time I want to put the tranny in first gear, and the shift from 1st to 2nd has to be slow and deliberate. There is a chance, if I shift quickly, of hitting reverse gear, and that is not a good thing. The fellow who put in the 911 motor and tranny said that he didn't put in the 901 front shifter because when the shift lever is lengthened, to bus length, the shift throw would be VERY long. I also find the shifter very vague. This could be the result of the very long bus shift lever. One option I'm considering is a Berg shifter and maybe even a rapid shifter set up with a bus lever. This still will not solve my problem of having to put a ring or press a lever to engage first gear. Any thoughts?

Ron, my new car will be using a "Weltmeister" quick shift kit (shorter throw) for the 901 5-speed, and also their heavier springs for the shift linkage that make it very hard to "graunch" reverse when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Maybe you could modify the "gate" lockout in your shifter so that you don't have to pull the ring to get into 1st but the lockout will still prevent "graunching" reverse?
