901 transmission

My brother has a new 901 tranny out of his 914. (He's upgrading from a 2.7L to a 3.6L). Anyways, is this an easy thing to wedge into my Vintage Speedster? I am getting a bit tired of the big gaps and high revs...

sorry. it's a 1974 5-speed 901 tranny.

The ring and pinion in that transmission will flip with no problems. If it is a 74, then it is a side-shift. Now that WILL be a problem in the speedster. You will need to change out the rear section of the case to get back to tail-shift. The earlier 914 901's and all 911 901's (obviously) are tail shift.

Of the porsche 5-speed transmissions, the 901 is physically the smallest and should offer fewest fitment issues (other than what is mentioned above).

As far as cooling for the engine goes - will your engine be OK with the lower RPM of the 5-speed on the highway?

Anyone have experince switching the 901 side shift to a tail shifter? Is it practical or would it be easyer to just buy a tail shifter?

I haven't swapped one, but I've read that its not that hard. The 901 tail shifts are everywhere. Every 914 guy would (pretty much every one anyway) like to have a side-shift as the linkage is easier and shifting more direct.

So - why not trade? Or sell the side-shifter out-right for probably enough money to buy a 2nd hand tail-shifter and have a little cashola left over. Think of it as extra "go fast" money!

let me clarify something further..will the 901 work with a swing axle???

I posed that question to some friends recently and was told the trans I was looking at had to be mated to an IRS set up.
