You can use the engine, transaxle & gauges. The engine/tranny need to have custom mounts. The torsion tube has to go & then install coilovers for the suspension. This is if you use VW running gear. The earlier porsche rear tube and trailing arms may fit with additional mods. The later arms are too long.

It's a lot of work. I've been messing around with my 911 setup for quite a while - I'm still not happy with the rear suspension.

I used the 911 engine & tranny because, like you, I had it available. If I were to do it again, I'd use a nicely built T1 or TIV VW engine. They're lighter & less expensive.

If you need some pics. of the setup let me know.

VW IRS axles will bolt up to a 901. My car has a 901 with VW trailing arms. I know the axles are VW as I have both VW and 911 and the 911's are different where the boot joins up to the CV joint but the bolt pattern is the same on the hubs in the trailing arms and the 901 trans. And the trailing arms are VW as they're stamped as such and have drum brakes...

Brian is correct. The stock VW CV's fit on the 901 tranny. That's what I'm using. For a detailed Suby conversion there is a guy in the UK (Chesil speedster)that shows a detailed step by step conversion. It's Friday, my brain is fried, I can't recall his name, but I think he posts here.
