I've decided to upgrade my 911 2.4L T engine and have bought a 911 2.4L S long block. The plan is to take my fan, alternator, shroud, Webers, headers, etc and bolt them onto the long block. Should boost the power from about 135HP to about 190HP or so I'm told.

Any of you have any thoughts on whether to keep the S cams or change to E cams? I'll have both sets as I have an extra set of E cams.

I know I probably could have picked up a nice VW engine for close to a bit more than what I paid for the long block but the car has always had a 911 so I'm going to stick with it.

Come spring in a few months and that will be my project this year...

Brian, my 2.7 has 36mm intakes, European pistons and cylinders, special cams, CIS with larger throttle bodies, stainless steel headers and a 'very' free flowing Dynomax exhaust system. Best hp guess of 190 to 200 hp. I'm thinking, down the road, of switching my old CIS for Webers or PMOs. The CIS doesn't like the hot cams and the car 'bucks' under 2200 rpm. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you want 190 hp out of a 2.4, be carefull you don't lose some driveability (like I did). You may not have any of my problems with the Webers, but then again you may. I'd gladly give up 20 hp for a car that was more driveable at low rpm.

Actually the 190HP mentioned is what the factory quotes for a 2.4S I believe. Check it out...1972/73 2.4L 911S...

www.pelicanparts.com/911/technical_specs/911_chassis_info.htm

..and oddly enough they quote 175HP for the 2.7L 911S but more torque of course. Who knows...I've read that these figures the factory quoted were actually the minimum acceptable figure and that many engines actually did better.

I'm not sure why a 2.7 with the same compression would create less HP than a 2.4? Could be the fuel injection system or cams or both?

I do have a new set of Vegnolia 2.7l 911S pistons and will probably build the 2.4L 911T into a 2.7L 911S one day...just not now. No time or room.

All things relative...the S should give 35% more HP than the T or a 15% more than the E. Roughly.

I put about 1,000 miles on the car each year so I'm not too worried in the reduced life.

Regarding the Webers Ron...

When I got my car it ran terrible at anything less than 4,000 RPM....popping, sneezing, farting, etc.

Through a lot of discussions with Bruce Anderson and PMO we determined that the main venturis were too big at 34 and should have been 30's, the main jets at least 3 sizes too big, the idles about 2 sizes too big, the air corrections seemed okay, the ignition timing was too far advanced and it was running plugs 2 to 3 times too hot.

When all these changes were made the car ran much better. No exhaust smoke when running and the plugs are a nice tan colour. I've got one of those O2 guages and will hook it up some day but it seems much better to me.

It was like the previous owner had the carbs too rich (you could see the exhaust it was so rich) so they compensated with hotter plugs and advancing the timing. It sure gave a good push in the back at 4,000 rpm but was a PITA to drive around town.

At any rate I'm told the Webers are infinitely more tunable than the injection systems and with the work that I did on my car, with Bruce and PMO's help, it sure seems that way.

I've already almost spent enough to buy a used set of Webers, just trying to get this old CIS sytem to run properly. I'd love a new set of PMOs, but $3000 US is too steep for me. They would probably cost me $5000 Canadian, when everyone got their share. Then there is air car. I would probably never get through with Webers.
Ron
thanks Brian and Jeff. My CIS system is working now, so for now it will stay. But, if I have any more major problems with it I will probably make the switch to Webers. This summer I'm going to cut an access hatch (in the bed) above the motor, so I can easily work on the top/back part of the engine.
I've seen Unclezak's posts on Pelican. I've also checked out Motor Meister, for reconditioned Webers.

Hi Guys. Never been here before. Just logged on now for the first time. The original question about power sources is rather subjective eh? The blue IM W/3.2 ltr motor is mine. I should take delivery in just a few weeks. CAN'T WAIT!! Been driving porsches for years. Anything from 944 turbo, 928S4,914's stock and w/Chevy 350 ;-), 911 coupes and cabs to 911 turbos. The last one W/425 rear wheel HP, 0-60 in 4.3 sec... I was looking for somthing a bit different. Henry at IM built it for me. I was pretty sure 4 cylinders wasn't gonna do it for me. What ever motor you decide on, I'm sure you will enjoy your car immensly!! God Bless

Marcos
Hey Marcos, welcome to the site. I really like my 2.7 (in my single cab), but I hate, hate HATE my CIS fuel injection system. Now, I've got a vacuum leak somewhere, so when I come to a stop the motor stalls. And does it stall every time I come to a stop? No, that would make it too easy to fix. I never thought I'd say this, but I'd rather have carbs than fuel injection, (at least CIS fuel injection).
Ron
I had a vacuum leak in my MB Turbo Diesel and for those of you who don't know...there's a lot of vacuum hoses in those cars!

Try one of those Mighty Vacs (I think that's the name). It took me the better part of a few hours but I found and fixed all the leaks (there were lots...even in the door locks) using one of those devices. Also handy for bleeding brakes, draining that extra litre of oil you shouldn't have put in (don't ask how I know..), etc.
