While we await Jake, I see it as a bolt in. You may need to add a bracket in the back to hang the motor, but I think you can do it without one. Maybe some tin mods to fit the pancake power plant and cooling system. I don't know that you would need to go with the Down The Middle fan, but it is sweet, and a bit of change. Now the expert can correct my impressions.
I got a 914 2.0L off ebay I'm using in my speedster (rebuilding it as a 2056). 1.8 should work as well, but you will have to convert to upright cooling, and right now, that means either a 911 setup, or Jake's DTM. Engine will bolt right up to the VW transmission.

Tell me about the exhaust you are using. Particularly interested in the portion that extends out beyond the body. I am currently using a standard stinger but would like to go in the direction you went.

If this "Jack" is me, I went with an "S" that comes off the header and doubles back up under the car and then comes out to the right for my Stinger. It works well and there's plenty of room to adjust valves, ect... If you want me to take a digital pic I can and send it to you.

It looks like you have a Supertrapp muffler attached to the end of the stinger, correct? Is the stinger an aftermarket unt or did you custom-fabricate the stinger so you could use the Supertrapp or what did you do to create the whole unit? How quiet/loud is it?
