914 gauges

Can anyone tell me what year 914 gauges will work in a speedster? From my understanding, the 914 speedometer runs off of the transmission instead of the front left wheel. Is this true for all 914's or am I completely wrong on this? If it does run off the transmission, is there a way to change it. I tried to do a search and came up with nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
