Yup! For some insanely wonderful reason, the 914 speedo (which is normally drven by gears in the transaxle) is perfectly calibrated to work with a VW cable and run off of the driver's side wheel like a stock VW.

The internals from the 914 speed can also be used as-is in a 356 speedo if you need to replace/upgrade those 50 year old speedo gears. An easy drop in replacement rather than an expensive repair/rebuild.

SO cool ! ! !

The combination gauge will work with a standard VDO oil temp sender and a Ghia fuel tank sender.

The 914 tach hooks up like any other simple tach; ground, 12 volt, negative coil, and the lights plug into the housing from the rear. The 914 uses plastic light plugs with a + and - lead on the plug. The 356-style plugs ground to the casing and have a single + spade on the plug.

Luck,

TC
I bought the three ring set from Palo Alto Speedometer for $138.00. Yes a bit salty but, when I considered another gauge set they were reasonable.
Installation: You need to remove the 914 gauges from the car, with a small screwdriver pry the black ring from the housing 1/4" at a time until you have gone around the gauge housing ...being careful not to drop the gauge glass. The chrome PA rings are made to be "factory crimped". Since this is not possible, I set the cleaned glass in place, then place 6-7 small dabs of JB Kwik Weld (too much and it will ooze out and be a mess)on the gauge housing and set the new chrome ring in place. The rubber rings included with the new rings don't get used. Upgrading to the chrome rings makes a difference. ~Alan
another question.......

Anyone know how accurate their speedo is??

I'm keeping in mind that I may have to go through a sva/biva test here in the UK...part of that says the speedo has to be within 5% accuracy.

Soooooo what profile rubber is going to give me an accurate readout on my 914 gauges???? Or is it just going to be trial and error?

Cheers
Gerry

(btw heres the carbon footprint of my gauge set...
I'm in Scotland, bought set from
Austin, TX,
shipped to office in Exton PA
Taken to Company event in Cancun, Mexico
Taken to Manchester, UK
Taken to head office in Netherlands
Collected by me and taken home to Scotland :)

That trip of your gauges sounds like stuff I used to do when working for a computer company......

On the speedo accuracy, they're actually pretty good, linearly, across the dial. Find what size wheel/tire was on the 914 (I know they were 4-lug VW rims, but can't remember whether 15 or 16 inch) and then go to a tire shop, ask to see the recommended tire size for a 914 and measure the overall diameter to the tread.

THAT is what you'll need on whatever tire you put on there. As a for instance, I'm running 205-50-R16 tires on the front of my Speedster, they are 24" in diameter and the Speedo is typically off about 2-4 mph (I'm running a Brazilian VDO Repro 356 speedo).

Good luck....gn
OK, so I look at Jeff's dash and, thinking I was done messing with my dash I realize that I forgot the beading along the top of the cushion/bolster/whatever-the-hell it's called. Nuts....

Guess I have yet ANOTHER reason to miss "American Idol (I really hate that show, but Kathy watches it every night) and make up a set of piping on my trusty, mid-1970's Singer Stylist Sewing Machine and install it tomorrow.

Always nice to have something to do in retirement......

Today, I went to "Bloody Mary Tuesday" downtown at Kathleens Pub, got my allergy shots, planted three citrus trees and two pecan trees, brought home a load of lumber for my new shed and am now watching yet another spectacular sunset, glass of wine in hand.

Had a 3 to 4" snow on Monday, and some more Thursday....

Its only England, or more accurately, the south east of the country that comes to a standstill with ANY snow fall....Snow in Scotland does not get mentioned on the national news...

I blame hysterical reporting by 24hr news channels for the panic....Same goes for the "credit crunch", much inflamed by lunatic reporting....

eg. 15 billion profit by Shell was being reported as bad news.....WTF??
