Anyone do this themselves? I picked up a pair and would like to remove the headrest portion and recover them (red leather would be nice!) for use in my Speedster. Have not cut into cover yet but assume I will have to cut some of the fiberglass seat shell (and maybe round top over) then roan the foam over. I'd like to buy a stock 914 reupholstery kit and just modify the top portion think that woudl save $ - is that feasible? Anyone have good source?. Understand VS uses modified 914 seats - is that true? Do they change any of the padding anywhere? Anyone have a couple good pictures?

Greg:

I'm using 914 seats, sliders and recliners (nichols1 in photos).

If I remember right, it looked like the headrest at the top of the seat was separate on mine, and possibly removed with a couple of trim screws, although that might just be for the upholstery.

Anyway, the seats fit into the space on a CMC like they were made for it, and they can't be too hard to modify to remove the headrest. I kept mine as I need the support.
Tweeks (Mid-America, now) had the upholstery kits for 914's.

I have 914 seats for my speedster. We removed the seams the the vinyl(?) and hacked off the headrest, it was just fiberglass. Then I had a friend who does upolstery just resew it minus some material just to get an idea of what they would look like. The look awesome! Definately the best seats I've seen in a Speedster aside from the originals. I can't wait to get them covered in black. Just my $.02
Finally stripped off the back center cushion piece on the seats. The head rests was part of the fiberglass shell. I marked it straingt across with magic marker and using an air power circular grinder cut the head rests off. I also cut the upper lip of the head rest off to re-glass to the top of the seat for reinforcement and to smooth over the top. The head rest area actually had several cracks in the fiberglass there. I'll take photos and post a How-to-Article as I move on with the project.
