Had couple questions on this for use in a rear engine speedie. First although it is a Porsche 901 transmission - it's set up for a mid engine layout. Unless you want 5 spds in reverse, you need to flip the ring/pinion gears. Apparently nothing to do this. Next the nose cone has to be replaced with a true 901 one -- or there is a company overseas that machines new ones. Then some drilling is required for the normal trans mounts. The tail shift trans is preferred for this conversion over the later side shift 914 version. Next issue would be using an AT VW starter (self supporting vs needing a bearing like the VW T1). If you are going Type 4 engine this is the ideal transmission as it was made for that engine/flywheel/clutch/starter). I have all the shifter pieces too. I also have a '75 914 1.8L core (needs a rebuild) engine with dual Solex 34's. I simply have to get my car on the road - so over-bite by hoarding these parts. Plus car is in FL and parts are in VA.
It takes about 30 minutes to swap the ring and pinion the other way on this transmission. When our first 914 transmission arrived, the R&P had been flipped for a rear engined setup (e.g. speedster). We were using it as mid - thus the swap was needed.

Nothing to setup, remove, swap, reinstall. Very, very easy. If shipping were not an issue, I would have already bought this.
