Had couple questions on this for use in a rear engine speedie. First although it is a Porsche 901 transmission - it's set up for a mid engine layout. Unless you want 5 spds in reverse, you need to flip the ring/pinion gears. Apparently nothing to do this. Next the nose cone has to be replaced with a true 901 one -- or there is a company overseas that machines new ones. Then some drilling is required for the normal trans mounts. The tail shift trans is preferred for this conversion over the later side shift 914 version. Next issue would be using an AT VW starter (self supporting vs needing a bearing like the VW T1). If you are going Type 4 engine this is the ideal transmission as it was made for that engine/flywheel/clutch/starter). I have all the shifter pieces too. I also have a '75 914 1.8L core (needs a rebuild) engine with dual Solex 34's. I simply have to get my car on the road - so over-bite by hoarding these parts. Plus car is in FL and parts are in VA.
Also have the SemiAuto VW starter to go with this transmission when mated to a T1 engine. I'll post pictures and the 1.8L T4 core engine soon. Trans weighs 100# and could be shipped.

Still available - Reduced to $140 for transmission with linkage and shifter - til end of this week. Also have 215mm forged 914 Flywheel with clutch and pressure plate for $50. Pictures of transmission available - email me your email address. Located just off I95 in Springfield, VA.
oh man - that is a great deal.
if you weren't on the other side of the country I'd pick that up in a second.
sweet deal on the Flywheel too. that is the perfect Type 4 'upright' conversion flywheel

Wolfgang, just wondering, will you be at Carlisle?
I think I have an extra nose cone and side plate if someone needs one.
Depending on how house in VA sells - I may be at Carlise Speedsterless again. Was hoping to sell before then - but guess delivery could be arranged for an ample supply of Blue Moon refreshments. Heck now I'm retired I may find time to retrofit it to my Speedster.
I believe this is the same transmission that is in my Speedster, and it really is nice. With mine, the shift pattern is first gear back to the left, and then 2, 3, 4, and 5 form the regular H pattern.
It's a great transmission for highway driving, but also easily used for around town.
That is, if it's the same transmission.

Wolfgang, I'm tempted and heading to Carlisle with no Speedster or Buggy. If nothing else works out, , you sell the house, , or whatever else life can throw at us, we can talk.
ship it? So you haven't shifted it in a car? Curious what the guts look like.
Seems like a 901 or 902 transmission would be way easier to start with.

It takes about 30 minutes to swap the ring and pinion the other way on this transmission. When our first 914 transmission arrived, the R&P had been flipped for a rear engined setup (e.g. speedster). We were using it as mid - thus the swap was needed.
Nothing to setup, remove, swap, reinstall. Very, very easy. If shipping were not an issue, I would have already bought this.

Dont you have to tap the case to put the vent screw on the other side?
