Looking for the bore and stroke specs for a 914 1700 type 4 motor. Are parts for a rebuild that much more expensive than a type 1? How torquey are these motors? I have the chance to pick one up down the street for $350.

90mm bore and 66mm stroke Actual total displacement is 1679 cc's
they work better if increased to 2,000 cc's or greater. If you do increase the size, many kits are available but the heads must be cut to accept the larger bore of the 2000 cc engine. You'd be better off trying to find a good set of 2000 heads and sell the 1700 cc heads mostly because they're getting harder and harder to find.

Jim..... Yes, type 4 parts are significantly more expensive than type 1 parts. But you get what you pay for, and the type 4 is virtually bulletproof when built properly, and VERY torquey. (is that a real word?) Yes....Raby is the type 4 guru. type4store.com

$350 is a good starting price.... You could do a standard rebuild of your 1.7 and have a VERY reliable engine...more so than a 1776 type 1. This could be done for 3k...not including the upright conversion.

At $350 it should be running. I have a '75 1.8L for $200 if interested - in Northern VA. It' complete to include flywheel - do have some of the cooling tins but not all. It has not run in years but freely turns over so good core for rebuild. Also have a set of 34mm Solexs with manifolds and linkage for $100 extra which includes 2 extra Solexs too.
I have been reading a lot about Type 5 engines that have the water jacket machined off. Type 1 stuff then fits this better case. It sounds a bit like the best of Type 1 and Type 4.

66X90 is the 1700 stock configuration. 350.00 is less than a blown up core engine is worth, I'd grab it for sure.
If you understand value you'll understand that the highest initial expense doesn't necessarily mean that something is more "expensive".
The Type 4 isn't for everyone and that parts aren't whored out to 3rd world countries nearly as much...Thats the reason why that are all we work with here.
