Well, the 'new' engine (now four years old) has been dialed in for quite a while, the five-speed has been in for over a year, the Vintage Speed shifter has been micro-adjusted so I can find all the gears, my 'Weber' flat spot has been put to rest by a new distributor, I finally found and defeated that clunk in the steering column (which turned out to be the wiper motor banging into the dash), so, of late, I've been getting to some of the smaller annoyances.
Like that wimpy 'meep-meep' horn that came on my VS.
I'm not one to obsess over having gen-u-whine Bosch horns peering through the grills, especially considering what it costs to find them and the fact that I'd have to fabricate brackets for them if I wanted everyone to see them (and why else do you get gen-u-whine Bosch horns, anyway?).
But I did want something that could at least be heard by the millennial texters and octogenarians hereabouts who have better things to do than look out for lane markings or silly little cars that come up only to their door handles.
So, after some Googling and Amazoning, I found these Hella horns that have an old-school, somehow 'German' sound that would be right at home on a 1950s Mercedes sedan. I hooked them up and, dang, if they don't sound just like the little audio clip for them in the Amazon ad. They're about twelve times louder than my old horn, and, believe it or don't, they were only eighteen bucks. Eighteen!
Which left me wondering how much VS invested in the horn that came with my car.
Curiously, they do look a little like the Bosch horns, so if you mounted them behind the grills they might actually look legit from about 20 feet away - just like my paint job.
At any rate, if you're looking for a better beep, you could do worse.
