Going to try a different return spring.  Mark did carb stuff only.  With as out of tune as it was seems like I may need a new set of plugs too.  Brake line hopefully this week.  Oil change and check valves and adjust and I should be good.  VS is mailing me a camber compensator and sway bar so will need to get that done.

Those carbs were way out of sync and the air mix adjustments were off leading him to think to stick in a new set.  Thinks some may have fouleD from running 500 miles so far out of adjustment.  Going to stick in Bosch platinum.  We did not pull the plugs as the motor was hot.  I will check those And if they look bad ill replace.

Todd, btw:  I don't know if Mark recommended a particular type of platinum plugs, but I'm using Bosch W8AP in Pearl - always have and it's the only set she's ever had.   Some people run a W7 plug, depending on the characteristics of their engine, but the W8's seem to be a good all-around plug.  They'll also take a hotter, (more powerful)  coil, too......just set your gap .010 wider than for a "normal" plug.

I was told the bosch platinums by Mark.  I went to Autozone, and Napa - netiher had any in stock.  I pulled two plugs and they were dark soot.  Took them with me, they were fouled for sure, but neither one had them in stock.  So, I did get another set of the bosch wap8ac (I think that is what they are)...the bosch plus.  I put them in and did a very small tweak on the air mix as I still had a minor pop...and all is wonderful in my speedster.  Mark got those things synched up perfect, and I took it out today and felt great.  I am going to order some platinums and change them again.  I changed the plugs in my last speedster a couple times so I knew how to contort my body and it only took me about 15 minutes total to change all 4...

Yay Me!!

If it wasent a day away it wouldnt be so bad.also check to see if the carbs are tight on the intakes& that the intakes are tight on the heads(down by the sparking plugs)they only go to about 14~16 foot pounds, but Ive seen a lot of them loose.

if it's still poping with the new plugs. pull the air cleaners off and run it for a min or so them turn it off and look down inside of the carb throats to see if there are any drips or drizzell of fuel into them, if you see it drip the float needs to be adjusted(something a good carb guy should perform, and may need another carb body top gasket(not aircleaner gasket, but may need that too). if you dont see any fuel drips or drizzels it may be an dreaded idle jet cloged...... no real issue there there not much to them at all, and a lot of times you can get them to suck it through, but choking the carb thriought for 2~3 sec with the rpm about 2000.you can do it on each 1 at a time.many times that will clear them with having to remove them witch for me isant any issue, and if you had a good mirrior& the motor was cool you could also probably do it.but the ones in the front are a pain to do. when ever I do any bodys I also use some spray carb cleaner to spray into the carb hole where the jet gos with the straw that comes with the cleaner to flush out any funk that may be in there. as for my car I have had 1 idle jet clog&cleared it by the choke method quickley.

I think we actually got it.  When warmed it is running really good.  I'll give you a shout offline to discuss but I think all might be well!  I am wondering what the bigger main jets might do that Roland is sending me.  Again though you did a great job and I think it's running really good my friend.

for the most part it's the airfilter, but fuel also does it.make sure you use gaskets on top of the carb, and then again on top of the linkage bracket so the lower filter housing seals to the throttel linkage plate/bracket. lastly is the velosity stacks, they are too big for the filter and eat the filter at the ends letrting the filter screen debris&crap go into the carbs&your motor. I mark each velosity stack&either bend them up some(but you have to be very carfull you dont want to crack the chrome as it is very hard for the engine to digest if it flakes off. a better way may be to take off about1/8"~3/16" with a belt sander where it has been marked st the end where it contacts the filter, it dosent take much and only there a the end, but be sure to mark each stack and do them 1 at a time then clean&replace them back on to the carb 1 at a time. the reason for 1 at a time?? well there bolt pattern is angled and they will only fit 1 way, if you do them all the same 2 of them will not fit.and when you remove them the linkage top plate can move and your nolonger synced up with the linkage. Do them 1 at a time and nothing moves, you get each one just right. 1 more thing the main jets dont come out with the stack in place. you could also mark it where the main jet stack is located in the center of the carb & knotch for easy removal of them with out having to remove the  velositystacks. the old aluminum webber delorto stacks were nicer and didnt need these mods.I personaly think it is a ploy to sell more filters when they get eaten up, but just what is the job of the filter?? to keep crap out of your motor.if it's eaten up it isant doing it's job at all. in addtion to this there is some filter covers(outerwears)(empi makes them too) and they fit over the filters and keep dust sized particles from clogng or going through the filters.I have had them on my bug since I put the carbs on about 10 years ago, I still have the orignal filters on it.it is a daily driven car , hear in hot sandy Fl, with no trunk on my car(engine is just hanging out in the breezzee, baja style) Ive had 2 sets of outerwears in 10 years.and my 16"x31"x15 rear hoosier tires are right there next to the carbs with no inner fenders at all.(this 356 will be a compleatly different learning contortionest expearance for me,I hope the biger motor will fit it as the engine will be almost 3/4" wider + a lot taller intakes too.might need some scoops or buldges for the carbs&aircleaners.

Mark is only about 7 miles from me.  Dropped by the other day to see him.  Has Baja bug with like 16" sand tires on the back (sorry bad cell phone picture).  Neat man cave complete with fridge and crapper.  Saw his '27 Ford "for sale" race car.  Showed me his "new" Speedster -- geeze, it's further along than mine.  Went over his custom engine build - hydraulic roller cams and custom heads.  Should be a screamer.  Ha, he gets phone call from TDR on adjusting carbs --- whips out same carb and sends TDR photo of the adjusting screws.  Sure glad he's near by!  Plan to take him by Jim Anderson's in Crestview - to see who has more projects.  Gonna be close call!  We should have at least 1 Speedster at Bugs on the Bayou this year.
