Many VW performance guys run the stock doghouse cooler (it's a type 3 cooler) or the Berg doghouse conversion kit (slightly larger type 4 cooler) without any overheating problems on large displacement, high output type 1 engines. If you have either of those coolers and you have an overheating problem check the list of items in the "Knowledge" article on cooling before adding an additional cooler.
If you must add an additional cooler the easiest way is with a MOCAL thermostatic adapter. The MOCAL sandwiches onto an existing spin-on oil filter and has a built in thermostat that begins to open at 160 F and is fully open at 180 F, bypassing the oil through your choice of auxilliary coolers. One of the small Setrab coolers with a fan should work fine (manual or thermostatic fan switch). Art Thraen sells the MOCAL and Setrab units and can be reached at acevw@aol.com.
