I last talked to Phil Hill at an auto show in Sonoma. There was a young boy about 14 or 15 years old standing behind me and when I turned to leave, the kid said "you know he is my greatest hero, I read about all about his career and all his races." Wow! said I and started to leave when my wife said "why don't you introduce them?" So I did. I asked the kid what his name was, what race he most admired, then interrupted Phil, introduced them, and watched one of the nicest most courteous exchanges I've ever seen between a celebrity and a fan. The kid knew his stuff. Later on during a parade around the town square there was Phil, the grand marshall, and the kid riding in a new Jaguar drop head leading the parade. Teary occasion then and now.

First Paul Frere at the start of the year, and now Phil Hill... two of the best! A sad day... to be sure.
