And the lucky owner is good ole Paul Harford!

Paul decided that his 182BHP engine wasn't quite big enough, so he decided to upgrade before I ever shipped it to him! I kept his old engine for my personal car and he and I decided to go big!

I'm finishing up his new engine now, all 2615ccs of it! Here are a few specs....

80mm stroke
102mm Nickies with custom JE pistons
44x40 valves
custom ground Web Cam
Weber 48mm IDAs
MassIVe DTM cooling system

shooting for 220BHP, totally daily driveable.... It'll be done next week!

C'mon Jake!!! That's all the specs you got for the GB-Inhaler? Georgy would have had three pages worth & a couple of "Mil-Specs" here & there. Try again.... (O:

Seriously now. Can't wait until MM gets it in & is running loose. Looking forward to a new sound shattering windows, as he drives down my hill. I feel like the "expecting uncle".

MM's New Best Friend
It bolts right up.... The bolt pattern is exacting on the TI and the TI, and even a 911! with the correct clutch parts interchange is a snap.

I'll be posting Pauls info to one of my sites and then linking it here.

I'm shooting for a flat torque curve, and all power before 6,300 RPM... we set him up with a Tangerine header, my biggest heads, and the best of everything... And a matched gearbox.. Of course its cooled wuith a MassIVe DTM..

Thereon has expressed interest in doing a feature on the build up soon...
Oh, it's a header. I thought you were shipping me a box of tangerines with my engine. Now I get it.
Man-0-Man, I'm having a hard time sleeping waiting for my stuff to arrive!

Working within my own limitations I bought and installed a new beefy billet gear shift knob in anticipation of big shifts. Man-0-Man, Medicine Man pacing now. Also got the tach recalibrated and a new 8000RPM face. Redline is at 7500, but I imagine I will seldom see that, (wink, wink)

Bill Drayer,
Alan M and I have installed 2 of Jakes big engines with DTM shrouds, and it all went smooth - bolt right up to a T-1 trans! Jake even supplied us with templates to make all necessary tin modifications to seal the engine compartment. There was some slight personal modifications that we did for the oil filter and oil cooler locations, very minor items at that. Engine wiring was the same as T-1, no needed modifications there. The installation was as easy as bolt it in, fill it with oil, connect the wires, then start the engine.
Eric, it depends on what "matched" means. A lot of the VW race crowd that have big BHP engines destroy "built" type 1 transaxles on a regular basis. VW transaxles like to chew up ring and pinion gears and diff spiders when subjected to that much power/torque.

If building a VW transaxle, a Rhino aftermarket transaxle case or gusseted late model stock case would be a good start; for an IRS a Porsche 901 or 915 is the best choice. Special stronger axle shafts and other good stuff is available for swingaxle units but a good and strong "built" VW swing transaxle can cost upwards of $4,000.
Speaking of new high hp motors, I was down to see Henry (at Intermeccanica, for you Newbies), and noticed that the slightly flared, dark blue roadster with the 275 hp, 3.6 litre Porsche motor was still there. Henry said that he's been working on that car for almost 2 years! It's an absolutely beautiful car, and very, very expensive. If I were ever to buy a new IM I would go with the slightly flared model, so there would be no problem mounting wider tires. The flares are intergraded into the body very well and look great. I'd also forget about the 911 motor and go for one of Jake's Massive motors and a gas heater for heat. Oh well, no harm in dreaming.
Ron
The gear ratios are optimized for a TIV application, to take advantage of the wide powerband and extreme torque.

As long as Paul doesn't drop the hammer at 6K and get wheel hop, the tranny should live just fine.

George, don't forget that your 90 has a severe weak link with an unsupported first gear... My 914 shatters side shift 901 first gears with only 180HP and a maniac behind the shifter. I'm on #3 as we speak. The other gears are great for up to 250 ponies or so, but first really sucks.
Ron,

Henry has indeed been building my car for two years and it is rather expensive. The motor is "only" a 3.2 ltr. instead of 3.6 as you mention in your post. I believe it to be generating around 260 hp. I suppose this is all rather subjective but having been driving porsches for a long time, I would wager my car, that I'll still be regularly winding my 3.2 ltr. out to the 6500 rpm redline when the motor Jake is building is a pile of broken parts.(No offense Jake.)

I was at IM this monday past and put around 100 miles on the car. Henry freaked all out on me when I called him from the car to tell him that it got a bit squirly at 110 mph. It was still pulling hard in the bottom end of 4th gear with redline aways off and 5th gear to go. I believe I left Henry muttering somthing about madmen. Quite sure had nothing to do with me...

Once the tires started to wear in, they had 18 miles on them the first time, 110 started to feel solid as a rock. I had the top down at that point though, mabey that made all the difference... Any ideas about aerodynamics of tops up or down?

Thanks for the compliment on the car! Henry has done an INCREDIBLE job on it!!!

Marcos

Hey Paul,

Does seem rather tactless eh? I don't know you either and prefer not to call names. I'm sure your motor will be all you are looking for and more. Having spoken to Jake in the past about his products, I am sure he is building you a very reliable engine.

Just don't emagine you'll get 100,000 miles outta it, let alone 2 or 3... but hey, post it when it turns over and prove me wrong.

Untill then, since all of our cars are different acording to taste, drive the snot out of yours and enjoy! I'll do the same with mine. I meant no offense and make a public apology.

Did I mention somthing about subjective... hmmmm

Marcos
Jeez Marcus, have you been attending the George Brown school of tact?
My engine a pile of parts while yours is still going strong. Don't know you but, (NONOWORD) comes to mind.

Thanks in advance for everyone's concern. I figured to just lay low and show up fast from time to time...Now that the cat's out of the bag, yeah I spent some bucks and I trust that the builder and suppliers have put together what I want based on my lunacy.

Now, everyone go back to your Bingo cards and we'll let Marcus build his monument his way, GB has cannonized himself his way and I'll just putt-putt along my way.

Tangerine anyone?
Ditto... Bruce, Jake and Luke.

Unlike many forums on the internet, this one should pride itself on it's freindly atmosphere for debate. Unprovoked borderline insults really have no place here. One George Brown to liven things up is enough (we love you just the way you are GB!) A good rule of thumb is to post in a manner as if you are standing in the same room as the rest of us. Do not hide behind the relative anonymity of the internet.

Of course these are just my personal opinions and may or may not reflect the others.

Oh yea, opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and most of them stink.

Jerome, I think it's important to say what you said and you said it well. Thank you. I think that a big engine adds a new dimension to our hobby and can make it more fun, but you can still have a lot of fun with a smaller one. I had a blast with a little 1776cc and came to really love the drives. I knew there was no reason to look for faceoffs with Mustang Cobras and the like, but I still got more looks than most of them did.

BTW, Jerome, I take exception to the last sentence in your post.
John H.
aka "Rosebud"
John or anyone else who took exception,

The last sentance is an old saying that I've heard many times. It was meant to clearify that the message was my opinion and to take it as nothing more than that. If anyone was offended I aplogize, it was ment in jest.

Maybe I should have used another old saying that means the same thing: "Free advise is usually worth what you pay for it."

Jerome
Huge engines are about 25% of what I build... My specialty are engines from 120HP to 180HP from 2056-2316cc...

The big ones get some extra bragging rights because what I put into them.

It appears that someones 911 ego was instilled, when their engine was installed.

That 3.2 weighs 200 pounds more than a Nickies TIV.... The only replacement for displacement is weight reduction....

The only replacement for HP is simplicity. I also work on 911 engines, but nothing newer than a 2.7. I only do them for the money unlike the TI and TIV stuff.
Steve, you can also see pictures on my build website. I built the last of Jakes TypeIV kits. Follow the Building a Speedster Kit on the SO homepage (or go to speedster.chriskate.net). You will probably have to page down a ways to get to engine pics, as I'm well on the way with getting my body prepped for paint and such.
