I just ordered and installed new stainless steel, fully polished  headlight grilles from AAC (Aircooled Accessories) in England. They also come in fully chromed for about $10.00 more, and also in mesh.

I went with the jail bar type as I understand from Der White's site that those were the original versions. I also understand that the mesh reduce the light emitting from the headlights by as much as 40%, while the jail bar type don't obstruct as much. I also have driving lights so I'm pretty well lit up anyway.

$86.10 delivered in two weeks.

Easiest upgrade I've ever done. Maybe 10 minutes invested in the installation. Hardest part is re-aligning the rubber seals between the headlights and the body.

Comes well packaged in a box with each grille in it's own individual bag, so no scratches. The polishing job is really good and the stainless, while light weight, seems pretty sturdy.

The fit is perfect! looks like it is part of the bezel, see the pictures.

I left a small gap between the bezel and the grille at the bottom only to allow for moisture to get out. (See in the last pic).

I also just ordered a set from ACC. I currently have mesh style but mine look kind of funny because the mesh is diagonal instead of horizontal and vertical which makes them look like something my wife uses in the kitchen for straining spaghetti!  The original 50s speedsters I saw on Monterey last week that had headlight grills had the ones like ACC is selling, but I think that they didn’t have glass under them however I didn’t look real close.

According to Der White's webpage, the early 356A grilles were like the ones I have, the jail bar type. They were a factory option at about $23.00.

The spaghetti strainer type, with the diagonal mesh, were a late 356A option at about the same price.

Evidently the spaghetti strainer type with the vertical/horizontal mesh were an aftermarket item.

I just realized that this sounds like it is posted to a PCA website. Shoot me........
